Winifred Winnie E. Barris, 88, of Pasco, WA went home to be with the Lord on Thursday morning, November 3, 2011 at Lourdes Medical Center. She was born August 15, 1923 in Forestville, NY to Milton O. and Edna Van Schoonhoven Barris. As a young teen, Winnie accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She graduated from Forestville Central School. Then Winnie went to Stratford Graduate School for a year before going on to Baptist Bible College in Johnson City, NY studying secretarial skills for the next 3 years. In 1950, she started a 38 year journey with Baptist Mid-Missions BMM in Cleveland, OH working in all facets of the home office before finally settling into the tax department preparing income tax returns for missionaries all around the world. During this time, she lived in Bedford, OH and helped care for a young pastor/evangelist and his large family. The Dr. Ed Morrell family continued to be her close friends throughout her life. During her busy life she never forgot about her own family either and cared for her father for over 12 years after he had a stroke. Starting in 1968, she also did bookkeeping for several years for another missionary board called the Committee On Missionary Evangelism. After retiring from BMM in 1988, she later became the secretary for the Bible Baptist Church in Bedford, Ohio where she had been attending for many years. She taught the Nursery Sunday School Class for several of those years. In 1996, she moved to the Tri-Cities in Washington State where she served as the church secretary of First Baptist Church of Pasco for nearly 10 years only "retiring" three years ago. What a great blessing and servant of the Lord she has been throughout the years. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Survivors include two sister-in-laws: Lois Barris of Dunkirk, NY and Alberta Barris of Lawrenceville, GA; two nephews: Bernard Rosalind Vacanti Barris of San Antonio, TX and Richard Barris of Canandaigua, NY; four nieces: Joan Johnson of Columbus, OH, Mary Jane William Ackroyd of Dryden, NY, Elizabeth Richard Regateiro of Cocoa Beach, FL, and Judy Douglas Meyers of Lawrenceville, GA; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Milton O. Barris, Jr. and Norwood Barris, and her infant sister, Roberta Barris. There will be a Graveside Service at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 7 at Riverview Heights Cemetery in Kennewick, WA and a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Pasco in Pasco, WA with a luncheon following. In lieu of flowers she requested donations be made to missions. A fund has been established at First Baptist Church in her memory for that purpose. Her friends give special thanks to all those at Home Sweet Home Assisted Living in Pasco, WA for their loving care of Winnie and also to those at Lourdes Medical Center in Pasco, WA who gave comfort to her during her last days.
