Obituary

William Gordon Simanton passed away on October 13th, 2015 at the age of 85. He is preceded in death by William Nolan Simanton and Louphelia LeNoir Simanton (his parents), Marcia LaVonne Simanton (his wife of 56 years) and Hannah Simanton (granddaughter). Gordon was born on July 27th 1930 in Malta, Montana. His family migrated to the Spokane area where he graduated from Lewis and Clark and was always proud of earning the status of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Gonzaga University with a Business degree, where he excelled at boxing in the featherweight class and fought on a team that captured a national championship in the early 1950's. After college he served his country in the Korean War and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves. His business career started with the Old National Bank in Spokane, where he advanced rapidly with a stop in Walla Walla and then finally the Tri-Cities where he managed the Richland branch for several years. Later in his career he worked at Hanford in the financial divisions for Westinghouse and Battelle until his retirement. Gordon was active in his church, served as Chair of the United Way and was instrumental, as Treasurer, in bringing the Regional Veterans Memorial from design to completion. He was a huge Zag fan and took particular delight in watching Gonzaga play basketball on the national stage. His other passion in life was golf, the game found him, but his devotion to the game was inspiring. He has the distinction of completing 4 career hole in one's, with one in each city in the Tri-Cities (West Richland, Richland, Pasco and Kennewick) which is now affectionately known as the "Simanton Slam". He leaves behind a brother James (Margie), a sister Vesta Van Trease (Dean), 5 children and their spouses, Marcia McNannay (Rick), Craig (Karen), Bruce (Lori), David (Julie) and Gordy (Jennifer), 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He pointed with pride having put all 5 of his children through college with no debt, was honest in all his dealings, loyal to his wife and family, kept his promises and had a legendary work ethic that was both steadfast and dependable. He lived a good and purposeful life, his accomplishments and contributions were many and he left the earth peacefully. We should all be so fortunate. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, October 24th at 1pm at the Shalom United Church of Christ in Richland.
