William Albert Nies, age 87, of Kennewick passed away peacefully Tuesday night. Born and raised in Erie, Colorado, Bill was the youngest of four children. He graduated from University of Colorado in 1941, then served four years as a Lieutenant in the Navy during WWII on board the USS San Jacinto in the South Pacific. After returning from his tour of duty, he attended Dental School at Northwestern University in Chicago, where he met his wife of 43 years, Jean Whiting Nies. Bill and Jean moved backed to Colorado in 1949 where he practiced Dentistry for 47 years. Bill was very active in the community, serving one term on the Englewood City Council and two terms on the Englewood School Board and the Arapahoe County planning commission. He was an active member of the Englewood Jaycees and the Lions Club. He was senior warden of St. Georges Episcopal Church. Bill believed that it was important to give back to the Dental profession that gave him such a rewarding life. He served as president of both the Denver Dental Association and the Colorado Dental Association. He was also a delegate for the American Dental Association. Bill was active in the fraternal organizations: Delta Sigma Phi at the University of Colorado and ZI XI Phi dental fraternity at Northwestern University. He greatly enjoyed fishing, hunting, skiing, golf, Colorado football, baseball and the outdoors. He was a member of Columbine Country Club and Valley Country Club, both in the Denver area. He also was a member of the ?Dirty Dozen? fishing club with his friends from Englewood. Bill leaves four beloved children: William Albert Nies Jr.of Ft Collins, CO; Wendy Denton of Woods Hole, MA; Laurie Richards of Lake Forest IL, and Tim Nies of Pasco. Bill was preceded by his wife Jean, sister Margaret Brodin, brother Delbert. In addition to his children, Bill is survived by his sister Dorothy Briggs, Son-in-law Kevin Richards, Daughter-in-law, Joelle Nies. And his five grandchildren: Fred and Jeremy Denton; Kendra, Ashley, and Lauren Nies. A memorial Service will be held at Muellers Tri-City Funeral Home in Kennewick 1401 South Union at 1:00 PM on Saturday April 29, 2006.
