The value of a man's life is not what he gains for himself, but in what he gives away to others. Walt Bogert went home to be with the Lord peacefully while at home on October 18, 2006, with his loving wife of 60 years, Irene by his side. Friends and family alike knew Walt to be one of the most gracious and loving men they knew. Everyone went away from Walt richer because of his unique ability to be give love and understanding unconditionally. His amazing ability to be tough but tender, and hard working yet light-hearted was an example for all. Walt loved visiting with people. There was always a warm greeting, friendly smile and a story or two to tell. Many will fondly remember Fourth of July and the hydroplane race parties on Walt's deck overlooking the Columbia River. His life was filled with faith and fellowship daily. He was a past elder and deacon and member of the First Presbyterian Church in Kennewick and Sunnyside. Involved in fellowship projects, he enjoyed his life and rejoiced by singing in the choirs of both churches. Walt will be greatly missed by his loving family and large circle of friends. Walt was born in Hedel, Holland, and came to America at the age of two in 1925. Walt attended Independence School in Outlook and graduated with honors from Sunnyside High School in 1941. His early days of marriage found him working for Carnation as a truck driver. Coming from a long history of farmers, he followed in his father's footsteps and farmed in the Sunnyside area for 31 years. In 1977, he moved to Kennewick to start a successful career in real estate including property management. Walt is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Peter and Morris and sister, Wilma Mitzel and his son, David. Walt will be greatly missed by his brother, Henry Jeanette of Sunnyside and sisters, Jeanette Alfred Mitzel of Randel and Marie Duim of Sunnyside. He and his wife, Irene and their children, Richard Suzan of Kennewick, Stephen Bonnie of Bellingham, Catherine of Kennewick, three grandchildren, Robin Bogert in Portland, Nicholas Bogert in Phoenix and Jennifer Bogert in Tacoma, two stepgrandchildren, Holley Schmeck and Nickolas Schmeck and one great-grandchild, Tyson. While his body is no more, his light, love, and spirit remains here with us and he will always be remembered with deep and abiding love. Services will be held Saturday, October 28th, 2006, 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 2000 W. Kennewick Ave., in Kennewick. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund or a charity of your choice.
