Julia Vivian Harns stepped into the arms of her Savior May 23, 2018. She was born to Frans and Ellen Laulainen on June 7, 1928, at home in Longview/Kelso, WA. As the oldest of six children during the depression, Vivian had responsibilities as her mother's helper while her father was away in the WPA (Works Progress Administration). She helped with the younger children, weeded, canned, cooked, baby sat, worked on her Aunt Agnes's dairy. For fun, she read books: there were always books! She loved to read and to learn, becoming a life-long learner. After graduating with honors from Robert A Long High school in 1946, Vivian enrolled in Lower Columbia College in Longview, WA. She received her Associates of Arts Degree in 1948 before transferring to Washington State College (now WSU). She received her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, magna cum laude, in 1950. In 1946, Vivian met her husband-to-be, Bill Harns, and he had a hot car. They fell in love and dated for 4 years before getting married in Longview, WA, in 1950. They lived in Pullman, WA, while attending WSU, and Vivian completed her Masters of Science in Home Economics in 1952. After graduating, they moved to Portland to raise their family. They were blessed with two children Theodore "Ted" and Gail Harns. Vivian worked as a chemist for the Mayflower milk company in Portland, OR. She received 2/3 the pay of male co-workers, so she constantly pushed the pink curtain. Because Vivian was not confrontational, she would say, "May I ask why?" The answer was "he" has a family to support. She eventually acquired a position at David Douglas High School, Portland, OR. She believed everyone was endowed with a gift or gifts, so it made no sense when someone failed to develop them. When someone was blocking her, she maneuvered to get where she wanted to go. She wanted kids to be treated as kids. In 1968 Vivian and Bill moved to Puyallup where she worked for John R. Rogers High School. She taught home economics, vocational educational which included her passion to build the early childhood development and Rogers Feast Program. Throughout her life, Vivian loved music. She was especially fond of romantic early 50s music, ballroom dancing, classical music, and musicals. In 2004, Vivian and Bill moved across the mountains to live with Gail and son-in-law Jake Laws in Pasco. On October 20, 2005, Bill Passed away. Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; parents; sister, Phyllis Laulainen McGraw (Arthur); and son-in-law, Jake Laws. She is survived by and sister Pamela Laulainen Rapach (John); brothers Linnaeus "Linny" Laulainen, Franklin "Frank" Laulainen, and Nels Laulainen (Jane); son Ted Harns (Elly), daughter Gail Laws; 4 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held June 2nd at 11am, at College view Baptist Church 2100 W Agate St., Pasco, WA. 99301.
