Virginia (Ginger) B. McDonald was peacefully taken home to be with her loved ones on September 28, 2013. Virginia was born on January 18, 1941 in the Bronx, NY. She was the youngest of three daughters born to Longin and Jeanette McCarrick. After graduating from Preston High School in the Bronx in 1958, she attended Hunter College in New York City, where she earned degree in Chemistry in 1962. Shortly after, she gave birth to her only child, Kimberly, in August of 1962. While working at Columbia University's Hudson Labs as a chemist, Virginia met her best friend and love of her life, Joseph McDonald. On October 12, 1968, Virginia and Joseph were married. After Hudson Labs closed, Virginia moved into the publishing industry. She worked at both Elsevier North-Holland and Chilton Publishing, editing textbooks, magazines, and other works. In the early 1970's, Virginia discovered her passion for teaching. She began as a substitute teacher in New York private schools, including the Greek-American Institute, until she found a permanent position at Yeshivah Torah Vemunah in the Bronx. There, Virginia made lifelong connections and frequently left students with poetry lessons they still remember today. In 1980, Joseph and Virginia moved to Los Angeles, CA for employment with the University of California, Los Angeles. From 1980 to 1982 she worked at UCLA as an administrative assistant. In 1982, Virginia and Joseph moved to the Tri-Cities, where Joseph took a job as a physicist. Virginia worked for the Pasco School District with the Special Programs department from 1983 until her retirement in 2000. Virginia's true life work, however, was as a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother to her family. Her grandchildren were undeniably the light of her life. She was also an avid animal lover and "loved all of God's creatures, even down to the spiders." Virginia was an "educated, opinionated, and vibrant" woman who always spoke out for what she believed in. Continuously upbeat, she would offer encouragement to her family and friends, even when she was going through her own personal hardships. She absolutely loved to read and had a particular passion for poetry, literature, and grammar. She also loved gathering with family and decorating for holidays. The McDonald household decorations were always a spectacle to be seen by passersby around Christmastime. In recent years, Virginia was thrilled to be able to stay in touch with all her friends and students from around the country on Facebook and Classmates.com. Virginia's greatest quality, however, was her unparalleled kindness and ability to truly inspire and shape the lives of everyone she met. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Longin and Jeanette, her sister, York, and her nephew, Keith. She is survived by her husband, Joseph McDonald, of Pasco, her daughter, Kimberly (Darryl) Banks, of Pasco, her grandson, Zachary Banks, of New Orleans, LA, her granddaughter, Victoria Banks, of Pasco, her sister, Barbara, of Melbourne, FL, several nieces and nephews, and her furry family members, Lucky, Candy, Sparky, and Zipper. At Virginia's request there will be no memorial service held. In lieu of flowers, Virginia would have appreciated donations to the Pasco animal shelter. The family would also like to thank Dr. Krause and the Apple Family Medicine staff, as well as her helpful friends at Albertson's in Pasco.
