Viola Hazel
Koontz
Mar 18, 1962 — Jun 22, 2022
Viola lost her courageous battle with cancer and fell asleep in death on June 22, 2022, holding her husband's hand surrounded by loved ones.
Viola was born in Bellingham, Wa to Jack and Hazel Pen on March 18, 1962. When Viola was very young, Jack remarried Rosetta, who stepped in as a loving stepmother to his six children. Growing up Viola loved singing and playing guitar with her brothers and sister who were her best friends. She and her sister would spend all day in the room singing and dancing along to records. Later she moved to Kennewick Wa to live with her mother Hazel. She met the love of her life a short time later at a truck stop. They locked eyes and he winked at her. That day she told her mother, "That is the man I am going to marry", and she did. Viola married Cubby Koontz on August 16, 1980, in an intimate ceremony at his mother's residence. After a few years of marriage, they had three beautiful children Jonathon, Amanda, and Jason. She loved them with everything she had. Viola and Cubby were married for 42 years. During that time they started their own business, enjoyed camping trips and events that included family. They were blessed with 10 grandchildren.
Viola's love expanded beyond her small family to her nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters, friends, granchildren, great nieces, great nephews, and numererous of her children's friends and their children. Over the years Viola has been a safe haven, keeper of secrets, wiper of tears, peacemaker, and so much more to all who were privileged to know her. She was known as Vi, Dear, Mom, Auntie Vi, Grandma, Grandma Vi. Viola was all about taking care of the ones she loved and would give you the shirt off her back and the last dollar in her pocket. Viola told me once she didn't know what else to do....just love. Her faith could move mountains and she knew she would see us again on paradise earth. Viola was the definition of unconditional love. So this is not goodbye. We will see you again someday and until then, you will be immeasurably missed.
Viola was preceded in death by her father Jack Pen and brother Gene Pen. Viola is survived by her husband Cubby Koontz, her 3 children: Jonathon and his 7 children (Britney,Dylan,Talayjah,Jordan,Kamron,Tiny & Zoey), Amanda and her son (Noah Ryan), Jason and Kari and their 2 children (Allie & Colton). Viola is also survived by her mother Hazel Norman, Stepmother Rosetta Pen, 3 brothers Mike Pen, Andy Pen (DeDe), Del Pen(Roxie), sister Sallie Tews (Bob), and sister-in-law Nicci Pen.
