Obituary

Vinona Marian (Peters) McGarrity was born October 15, 1919 to Wilhelm and Emma (Krohn) Peters in Wausa, Nebraska. She attended school there and upon graduation from high school moved to Norfolk, NE where she was a live-in housekeeper/babysitter. After saving enough money, she moved to Omaha and attended beauty school. During this time she met Eugene Calvin McGarrity and while on leave from the United States Army they married on January 6, 1941. They were blessed with two daughters and a son. During their marriage, they lived in many small towns in Nebraska and Iowa and finally settled down in Omaha in 1950. During the summer of 1963 they moved to the Omaha suburb of Ralston. Vinona worked as a hairdresser for a few years and then worked at University Hospital in Omaha. She then went to work at Western Electric assembling switches and working in inspection. She retired in February 1982 with 22 years of service. In 1996 Vinona moved to the Northwest and lived with her son in Kennewick, WA for a few years and with her daughter in Stanfield, OR for a few years and in October 2008 moved to Parkview Estates Retirement Facility in Kennewick where she lived independently until declining health required some care assistance the last few days before passing on February 23, 2014. Vinona was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene; daughter, Suzanne Marie McGarrity Reed Conway; brother and sister-in-law, Wilbur and Doris Peters; sisters and brothers-in-law, Opal and Lyle Schultz and Dorothy and Norris Gillilan; and son-in-law, Robert Martens. She is survived by her son, Gilbert (Judy) McGarrity of Kennewick, WA; daughter, Patricia (Ed) Martens Davison of Stanfield, OR; daughter-in-law, Sandy McGarrity of Kennewick, WA; sister and brother-in-law, Vernal and Willis Wilbeck of Wausa, NE; brother and sister-in-law, Albur and Florence Peters of Wausa, NE; 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many friends. Vinona was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, LaVista, NE. A private memorial service will be held for immediate family on Saturday, March 1, 2014. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Omaha, NE. Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family would like to thank Jan Waymire for helping with Mom's care the last few days of her life. We also would like to thank the Tri-Cities Hospice team for their help and care. Memorial contributions can be made in Mom's name to the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice.
