Tom Mercer was born on March 8, 1926 in Spirit Lake, Idaho to Leotta and Thomas Mercer. After Tom's Father passed away when he was 8 years old, his Mother and younger sister (Mae) moved to Mansfield, Washington to live with family. Tom enlisted in the US Army when he turned 18 and served his country proudly from 1944 to 1947 in the 98th Infantry division. After returning home from his service he attended Eastern State College (now Eastern Washington University) where he majored in Education and played baseball during his college years.
