Theodore Ted Jacob Reitz, 84, of Pasco, WA died at the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice House in Kennewick, WA on April 29, 2010. He was born July 11, 1925 in Fairfield, WA, the fifth of eleven children born to Rev. Otto and Helene Wittrock Reitz. Ted was baptized on July 25, 1925 and later confirmed his faith on May 5, 1940. Ted graduated from Fairfield High School in 1943 and from Pacific Lutheran College in 1947 with a B.A. In 1948 he received a B. Ed from the College of Puget Sound and later a M.S. from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1957. Ted taught high school science at American Falls, ID for five years and at Reardan, WA for three years. He then moved to Pasco in 1957 and spent the next thirty years teaching chemistry at Columbia Basin College. During his hospitalizations, he was pleased to receive care from many of his former students. He was a member of the American Chemical Society for twenty five years and served on NORCUS Richland for thirteen years. Ted married Louise Hash on November 7, 1957 in Hermiston, OR. He was an active member in the Lutheran church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, council member, and delegate for district conventions. He served as a founding board member of the Tri-Cities Lutheran Family and Child Services. Ted was especially interested in and supportive of national and international Christian missions. One of the highlights of his life was the opportunity to travel to Papua New Guinea in 1986 as a guest for the 100th anniversary celebration of Lutheran missionaries. During his retirement, Ted kept busy by volunteering with Meals on Wheels and Bethlehem Lutheran School, working in the yard, and various church activities. Ted is survived by his wife Louise, four children; Margot Miroslaw Zychla, Ben Jeanne, Nila Devin Smith, and Lloyd Kristin. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Steven Zychla, Samantha Reitz Ben, Laura Smith, Preston and Alec Reitz Lloyd. Ted's surviving siblings and spouses are Robert Doris, Armin Miriam, Marie, Otto LaVerne, Rosaline John Marvin, Joe Pat, Karl Michele, and sister-in-law Pearlyn. He is also survived by numerous cousins and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Elisabeth, and brothers Gerhard and Marcus. The family would like to thank Dr. Jim Campbell and the staff at Lourdes Medical Center for many years of compassionate care. The family would also like to thank the staff at the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice House for their compassionate care of Ted in his final weeks. A funeral service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Friday, May 7, 2010 at 11:00 am located at 2505 W. 27th Ave. Kennewick, WA. There will be a luncheon following the funeral service at the church. The burial service will follow at Gideon Lutheran Cemetery in Connell, WA, at 3:00 pm.
