Shirley Mae Hutchinson Scott Thompson (né Lang), known affectionately as Shirl, passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 90, in Richland, Washington. Born on September 8, 1933, in International Falls, Minnesota, Shirley lived a life marked by a love for knowledge, fitness, and community involvement.

An avid reader since her youth, Shirley set a strong example for her family, emphasizing the importance of education and physical well-being. She was a familiar face at the local library and stayed active by participating in dance classes, biking, and skiing—activities she took up in her 50s. Her passion for the arts was evident as she often graced the stage in local musical productions and ensured that music was a staple in her household.

Shirley dedicated many hours volunteering at Good Samaritan Hospital and supporting various youth organizations like the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and local sports teams. In her 60s and 70s, she traveled internationally as a chaperone for the Heart of the Valley Children's Choir, visiting countries such as China, England, France, and Austria.

A homemaker by profession, Shirley created a nurturing home for her family and was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Corvallis, Oregon. Her hobbies included playing bridge, knitting, and traveling—especially to places like Reno, Tahoe, and along with the OSU Beavers sports teams.

Shirley is survived by her children, James Robert Hutchinson (Ginger), John Edward Hutchinson, and Vannin M. McNair (Gary); her grandchildren: Breanna McNair, Elizabeth Medford (Ryan), Zach McNair (Laura), Heather Sommers (Josh), Kate Parker and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her spouses, Robert D. Hutchinson Jr. and Marlin Thompson Jr., and her great grandson, Brodie McNair Medford.

Services will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 1 pm at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Corvallis, Oregon. Mueller's Funeral Home in Kennewick, WA is overseeing the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Hospital in honor of Shirley's commitment to community service.

Shirley's legacy of love, wisdom, and community involvement will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her.
