Shirley Ann Newell (Zurn) was born on November 10th 1931, in Richwood Township, Becker County Minnesota, to Ambrose and Lucy Zurn. She was the second oldest of twelve children. Shirley spent her childhood growing up on the family farm in Callaway, Minnesota, and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1949.
In 1951, Shirley relocated to Richland WA to work at Hanford, where she met the love of her life Leonard James Newell Jr and were married May 31st 1952.
In 1955, Shirley and Jim moved to Pasco where she spent the rest of her life as a resident and mother raising her 7 children. After her children were of school age, she returned to the work force in 1979 and retired from the Pasco School District in 1994.
Throughout her life, she was a dedicated Catholic and a member of the St Patrick's parish. She loved to play cards, bridge, pinochle and attend school and sport activities of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also loved gardening and tending to her house plants. She was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America and Alter Society.
After being widowed for several years, Shirley met Peter Jackson and married in 2002. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her husbands Jim Newell and Pete Jackson, her 4 brothers (Raymond, Vernie, Clarence and Ambrose Jr) and 3-sisters (Donna, Mary and Betty). She is survived by her siblings Ruth Atwell (Clay), Richard Zurn, Linda Walz (Gene) and Gordon Zurn (Jo Anne). She is survived by her 7 children Mitchell Newell (Colleen), Cherryl Jones, Kevin Newell, Brook Newell (Heidi), Dwight Newell (Barb), Vernie Newell (Lisa) and Richard Newell. As well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren Carolynn Jones, Eric Jones (Carin), Bryson Newell (Alexandra), Garrett Newell, Shelby Rechnitz (Trevor), Eli Clure (Haley), Christian Nunez, Chandler Newell (Bailey), Camryn Newell, Sammy Newell, Alicia Jones, Joey Newell, Jadyn Jones, Valerie Newell, Maeve Newell, Diana Dionne and Jim Dionne. Also survived by step-children Aleta, Eric and Sue Jackson.
Faith and family were her top priorities as well as making many summer trips to Minnesota to visit family and friends. In quoting Shirley, "It was always my hope that my sisters and brothers would say about me, She had our Mother's good qualities."
