Shirley Ann Grimes (Childers) was born on a winter day in Chillicothe, Missouri, on January 24, 1936. She moved with her family to Prosser, Washington, in 1948 where she lived and worked on a 40-acre farm alongside her parents and siblings tending to the livestock and crops. From there, a strapping young James Cook drove into her life, and swept her off her feet. The two love birds were married on April 21, 1953 where their family legacy foundation was built. Shirley and Jim made their home in Grandview, Washington. Shirley worked at the fruit and vegetable packing houses and also worked as a nurse's aide in an assisted living home while caring for her growing family. Shirley lived in Aberdeen, Washington, from 1968 to 2001 until the retirement of her husband when they decided to set off into the world to explore in their RV. They were snowbirds between the family in the north and working on an ostrich farm in the south. They settled back down to Eastern Oregon and then Washington.

Together, Shirley and Jim enjoyed renovating old homes, from chicken coops to 3-story houses. They enjoyed sitting next to each other in the truck their entire married life, side by side wherever the road may roam. They would putter around in the boat fishing at all their favorite lakes. Shirley took great pride in spoiling her main love of her life from his favorite breakfasts to fresh coffee. Motherhood was her crowning achievement, that included a set of twins. Shirley and James were blessed with 4 daughters and 2 sons and all their spouses. She instilled the love of our Lord into raising her children with the utmost importance. Her favorite hobbies were gardening, sewing and painting. For a short time, she ran a small tailoring business in her home called "Magic Needles."

Shirley and Jim were married for 57 years until his death in 2010. Shirley met and married Bob Childers in 2015. She was a devoted wife to him until his death in 2019.

Shirley is survived by her six children, Jeanie Blanchard (Art), Buddy Cook (Norma), Bonnie Farinas (Manuel), Cathryn (Cathy) Martinez (Gary), Mary Hermsen (Frank) and Will Cook (Angie). She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren: Michelle, Beth, Seri, Ben, Monique, Julie, Nathan, Tracee, Vanessa, Amanda, Jonathan, Rosi and Lilly; her 32 great-grandchildren: Caleb, Toby, Robert, Abraham, Abby, Elsa, Jesse, Alaina, Jordan, Garrett, Scott, Iza, Anna, Lara, Ariana, Sophie, Wyatt, Heidi, Ryker, Reece, Clarissa, Danny, Jacob, Lizzie, Liesl, James, Charlie, Preston, Elias, Jenessa James (JJ), Tina, Irina; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Sylvia Grimes-Glass.

Shirley is preceded in death by the love of her life, James Edward Cook; her parents, William and Lida Grimes; and siblings, Robert, Lois, Peggy and Carol Sue.

Shirley passed away peacefully in her home in Kennewick on 5/23/24. There will be a simple graveside service on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Mueller's Desert Lawn Memorial Park with a gathering to follow at Cathryn's home.
