Russell Watchman Appleyard passed away in Kennewick, Washington on October 4, 2011. He was born in Dunlo, Pennsylvania on November 13, 1921 to Mary and Arthur Appleyard. He married Roma Neglay on March 16, 1947. They were married 63 years. They had no children but were blessed with numerous nieces and nephews. Russell worked as a plasterer for Day Brothers Construction and Neglay Brothers Plastering. In later years he leased a gas station from Gull Oil Company of Seattle which he ran for ten years at Columbia Center North. He retired in 1985. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Tech Sergeant in H.Q. Company 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 11th Airborne Division. He served in New Guinea, Leyte, Luzon and Manila. He received a Purple Heart medal and a Bronze Star medal. He was honorably discharged on November 29, 1945. Russ was an avid reader and he enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing with friends and family. He spent many hours among friends, working out at the Tri-City Athletic Club well into his 80's. He was preceded in death by his parents Mary and Arthur Appleyard and brothers James and William Appleyard. He is survived by his wife Roma; and brothers John Ann of New Carrollton, Maryland and Robert Mitzi of Wimber, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the VA in Russell's name. Memorial services, with military honors, will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2011, 2:00 p.m., at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union Street, Kennewick.
