Obituary

Robert "Bob" Walsborn was born in late May of 1933, amidst the expansive backdrop of the Odessa, Washington wheatfields, to John Henry and Emma Katherine Walsborn. Later in childhood his family relocated to Portland before eventually settling in Prosser. He loved his time growing up in Portland and shared many wonderful stories of his teenage years in the bustling city.

With his father's signature and blessing he enlisted in the United States Air Force at 17. He served his country proudly, working as a radio operator while stationed in Alaska and the Philippines during the Korean War. His time spent in the military would spark a lifelong love of radio communication, and he spent many hours in retirement talking with friends across the globe on his ham radio.

A stop back home in Prosser in the early '50's would alter the course of his life forever. He bought a cup of coffee from the prettiest girl he had ever laid eyes on; and, after her shift was over, he offered her a ride home. She said yes, and they spent the next 70 years side by side.

Bob and Polli had two children—Steve, born in 1955, and Cheryl, born in 1956. Their family of four was tight-knit, and their stories of their childhood in Richland are cherished memories.

When their children married, Bob gained an extra daughter (Linda) and son (Dan) both of whom he loved greatly.

Bob's civilian career included work for the U.S. Forest Service and Ice Harbor Dam. He loved having something to do; and after retirement, he couldn't help but keep himself busy enjoying second and third careers working for KIE Electrical Supply and as a school bus driver for Kennewick School District.

His Catholic faith was foundational for him. He and Polli were active members in the Parish of the Holy Spirit in Kennewick where they made many long lasting and treasured friendships.

They loved their community in Kennewick and had a close group of neighborhood friends known as "The Hood" that meant the world to them as well.

It feels impossible to summarize the life of a man we loved so dearly in just these few sentences. Grumpy, a much-loved name for our actually very sweet and pleasant Grandpa, was made of all the best qualities that God has on hand. He was quietly strong, loving, curious about the world, smart, generous, and funny. He loved to read; you would be hard pressed to ever find him without a book in hand. He was a Depression-era baby who came from humble beginnings, but he never let that stop his love for learning and his joy in sharing his knowledge with others. But more than anything else, he loved his wife Polli (Granny) and his entire family so incredibly well.

You would never find Grumpy without Granny or Granny without Grumpy.

We will miss his hugs, his smile, and the twinkle in his eyes. He may have been small in stature, but he had the biggest and kindest heart.

He is survived by his wife Polli, his daughters Cheryl (Dan) and Linda (Tim), his sister Patti (Buzz), six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and countless other family members that adored him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Claudine, brothers Howard & Larry, and most recently, his son Steve. We know there is a joyful reunion in heaven happening right now between them all. In fact, we can practically hear his brother Larry laughing from here.
