Robert J. Orr passed away on Monday, April 21, 2011, at the age 81. Born in Harlowtown, Montana, on May 28, 1929, Bob graduated from Kellogg High School in Kellogg, Idaho. After joining the Air Force in 1949, he was sent to Scott Field, Illinois, to become a radio man. While there he met his future bride at a YWCA dance. He was shipped to Okinawa where his tour was extended due to the Korean War breaking out. After 3 1/2 years, he received approval for discharge to care for his gravely ill parents. Bob and Audrey married on January 26, 1952, in Deposit, NY, and then settled in Smelterville, Idaho, and began their family. Bob took a job as an electrician's apprentice for Bunker Hill Mining Company in the zinc plant. The family moved to Boise for a year and then relocated to Kennewick in 1962 where Bob worked as an electrician at Hanford. After the Hanford layoffs, Bob began working construction for Bonneville Power where he stayed until his retirement in 1994. When they were new in town, they were invited to attend square dance lessons. So began Bob's love for square and round dancing. Bob twice served as President of the Prairie Shufflers Square Dance club and helped build a building just for square dancers. Bob and Audrey were also active in the council, state, and national square dance organization, traveling extensively to state festivals and national conventions. Bob and Audrey received the prestigious McGregor award for outstanding Washington State square dancers in 1978. Very involved in his community, Bob was an active member of West Highlands United Methodist Church where he ushered, chaired committees, taught adult Sunday school, and started a youth campership fundraiser where they prepared 30 years of Easter breakfast for the church, donating all food and proceeds to the fund. As a Kennewick School Board member for 10 years, Bob felt passionately that public schools were for all students, not just the college bound. He was instrumental in getting the Vocational Skills Center now known as Tri-Tech Skills Center started. After leaving the Kennewick School Board, he continued lobbying in Olympia for support of state wide vocational programs. Upon retirement, Bob and Audrey purchased a motorhome and traveled all over the U.S. and Canada, even as far as Nova Scotia. Bob is survived by his wife, Audrey; his daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Randy Yeats; Colleen and Walter Kopf; his son and wife, Jim and Ann Orr; daughter-in-laws, Kathy Orr and Beverly Orr; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his sons, Michael and Russell. The memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 29, at West Highlands United Methodist Church, 17 S. Union, Kennewick.
