Obituary

Robert Lamont Miller, 76, died March 11, 2015, at home in Kennewick of natural causes. He leaves his daughters, Carrie Miller, Melodie Starkey, Jennifer Miller, his son, Alec Miller; his 8 grandchildren: Elizabeth Starkey, Robert O'Sullivan, Nicholus Miller, Carly Starkey, Caitlin O'Sullivan, Stephen Starkey, Zachary Miller, Hayley Miller; and 4 great-grandchildren: Madelyn Miller, Isaiah O'Sullivan, Hailey O'Sullivan, and Jase Miller. Born in Alta Dena, California to Thomas and Helen (Jarvis) Miller, he was raised in Kennewick, graduating from Kennewick High School in 1956 and marrying Norma Jean Everett of Pasco that July. They were married for more than 54 years, until Norma's death in 2010. Bob attended the University of Washington where he became a physicist, and later earned his engineering degree from Northwestern University. He worked out at Hanford until production work stopped in 1973, then moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan to work for Bechtel. In 1975 Bechtel transferred him to their San Francisco office. In 1977 he returned to the Tri-Cities, taking a position at Hanford with Rockwell in criticality safety. Following his interest in nuclear physics full cycle, Bob eventually specialized in decommissioning and decontamination, and in this capacity served as a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency, traveling across the US and abroad to advise on the safe shut down of multiple reactors. After retiring from Hanford, he worked as a project manager at Brookhaven National Laboratories, decommissioning the Brookhaven research reactor in New York. Bob was a licensed gunsmith, a meticulous gardener and an avid reader. He and Norma were both lovers of animals, with a house full of cats and dogs at any given time. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in Robert's name to Hospice, 1480 Fowler St, Richland, WA 99352. A graveside service will be held Monday, March 16, 2015, 10:00 a.m., at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 10th and Union Street in Kennewick. A small reception will be held for family and friends at the Miller's home following the service.
