Obituary

Rick Lane Johnson passed away, peacefully, in his Kennewick home early Wednesday morning, July 30, 2014. Cathy, loving wife and primary caregiver, was present. His passing ended an 18 month courageous battle with cancer. Born September 13, 1951 in Richland, Washington to proud parents Alfred and DeFawn Johnson. Rick was educated in the state of Washington. He graduated from high school in Sequim and earned a BS degree from Central Washington University. Shortly after, he started working at Hanford. 35 years later, he retired. His last assignment was with Hanford Closure. Rick was a loyal hard working employee who prided himself on 'never missing a day of work.' Rick lived life with great passion! Whether he was golfing, baking (best known for his tasty snickerdoodles), or playing a game of cribbage, he enjoyed himself, his family and many friends. Rick was an avid boater. He loved the water and spent many hours cruising the local waterways with his constant companion of 30 years, wife Cathy. He was a member of the Clover Island Yacht Club and enjoyed decorating his boat for the annual Christmas Lighted Boat Parade. Rick was a member of the Coast Guard Reserves, serving seven years. He had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel and spend time in Sequim. Rick was known for his generosity, infectious laughter, warm smile, and ability to tell stories and jokes. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. Rick is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Johnson and DeFawn (Johnson) Gaskell. He is survived by his wife Cathryn L. Johnson, Kennewick, Washington; sister Cathrine (Johnson) Rutz, San Antonio, Texas; children Kimberly (Corey) Fox, Pasco, Washington; Jennifer (Jacob) Asher, Sequim, Washington and William (Johanna) Olsen, grandchildren Braden Olsen, Kellen Olsen, and Lindsey Olsen, West Linn, Oregon, along with multiple cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Chou, Dr. Gamboa, Dr. Kelly, and Dr. Pullido and their staff for their exceptional kindness and compassion. A Celebration of Rick's life is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Saturday the 16th of August at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S Union Street, Kennewick, WA 99338.
