Richard Herbert “Dick” Stone was born November 5, 1941, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On Thursday, August 13, 2026, Dick’s soul and spirit departed his body to be with the Lord.

During his childhood, Dick and his family moved from Wisconsin to Columbus, OH, then to Atlanta, GA, and eventually to Portland, Oregon where he spent his teenage years. Dick graduated from Oregon State University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in General Social Science, double-majoring in psychology and sociology, and double-minoring in physical science and journalism.

He earned his Master of Arts in Communications, with an emphasis in Research, at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1966. Between his undergraduate and graduate studies, he spent approximately 18 months working as a reporter and photographer for The Bulletin in Bend, Oregon.

In 1966, Dick accepted a position as Director of Research for the Republican State Central Committee in Olympia, Washington. Later that year, he married the love of his life, Kathleen Harris.

In 1969, Dick and Kathy moved from Olympia to Dallas, Texas, where Dick joined a political consulting firm. A little over a year later, he purchased the company and established his own research consulting business, Survey Research Sciences, which he ran for six years. He was then recruited to assist a lucrative company which manufactured stamps used for symbolizing semiconductor chips.

During his tenure there, Dick considered purchasing the company but recognized that changing technology could affect its future. He subsequently became a professional recruiter, serving high-technology clients in the defense industry throughout the country. This business prospered under President Reagan but eventually closed due reduced defense spending under President George H. W. Bush.

In 1990, Westinghouse Hanford hired Dick to work in communications research and media relations. After more than five years there, he once again established his own consulting firm. In 2000, he joined Information Matters, where he remained until his retirement in 2004.

In his younger years, Dick enjoyed scouting, camping, fishing, scuba diving, skydiving and skiing. He maintained a lifelong interest in photography, while his greatest passion was the Lord -- studying God’s Word, and sharing it with others.

After retiring, Dick and Kathy participated in an 11-week short term mission to England with Caleb Project, gathering information and preparing a report on how Christian workers might better communicate with Muslims. He also traveled to Shanghai and Nanjing, China, where he spoke at universities and developed relationships with Chinese college students.

Dick was an active member of Bethel Church in Richland, where he served in several capacities, including as a small group leader, small group coach, and in Bethel’s benevolence ministry.

Dick came to faith in 1971 and sought to live his life for the Lord. In 2010, he came to a deeper understanding of his faith: rather than simply living his life for Christ, he desired to allow Christ to live His life through Dick, so that he (Dick) might exude Christ’s light and life to others. This was a powerful epiphany for Dick, and it significantly bettered his life.

Dick is survived by a daughter, Anne Kathryn Guerrero, along with her husband Arturo and their oldest son, Andy; son John Stone and his wife Jessica, and their children Will (Anna), Clay, Joe and Lizzie; and younger son David Stone and his wife Hannah and their children Zachary, Declan, and Imani. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marguerite Harris Fitzpatrick, of Milwaukie, OR.

Dick was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathy; beautiful sister, Coral Edwards; and two treasured grandsons, Alec and Adam Guerrero. He now joins them in eternity.

A memorial celebration of Dick’s life will extol God’s character, God’s accomplishments, and God’s promises rather than Dick’s. The service will be held at Lighthouse Church, 1007 Wright Ave, Richland, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2026. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to encourage the surviving family may make a donation to Bethel Church’s Assistance Ministry that helps those in need.
