Our brother, Richard "Rick" Douglas DeHart passed away Saturday July 23, 2016 at Swedish Hospital, Seattle, WA, at age 56. Richard was born January 18, 1960 to Charles Ernest DeHart and Beulah Maxine Ellis DeHart in Kennewick, WA. He was the youngest of four children. Richard attended Kennewick Schools, receiving his GED, later attending a multi-media broadcasting school in Seattle. His dream had been to become a sports broadcaster. He was a devoted Seattle Seahawks fan at a time that wasn't cool to admit. He knew all the players and their stats by heart, even until his passing, especially the Seahawks, the Oakland Raiders and the Pittsburg Steelers. Being a super creative person, he was a great artist, but his passion was music. He was for many years a working musician, proud that he was able to get the gigs to support himself. In the Tri-Cities he was the creative founder and bass player for the hard rock band "Fragile" and played with "Hard Rain" in Seattle. He played with many other bands, traveling to several surrounding states. His brother Donald remembers Richard receiving a right hand bass guitar and converting it to left hand, the first indication that any of us knew he was ambidextrous. In his later years, Richard was a jack-of-all-trades, working as a building supervisor, with the love of his life Leanne, at the apartment building they shared in Seattle. Richard over the years had proven to be an extremely hard worker, not deviating from a project until it was done…and done the right way. Even as a child, Richard had an infectious grin and winning smile, that was amplified with two deep dimples in his cheeks, endearing himself to many. To say he was personable was an understatement! I remember our mother saying that on the first day of kindergarten; he came home saying he had a girlfriend who he kissed on the bus! This was the beginning of Richard's love and compassion for women throughout his life. Speed roller skating was something Richard shared with his brothers Chuck and Donald during their teen years, excelling in both individual and group events and representing the area at local and state competitions. Richard was gifted athletically and very intelligent. He was especially proud of his American Indian heritage, wearing his hair long down his back and wearing native inspired apparel. But the proudest moment for Richard was the birth of his son Jaric. All conversations inevitably began or ended with pronouncements of the accomplishments that Jaric achieved or activities he was involved in. To have his son enter and excel in college was beyond his wildest imaginings. Richard and Jaric were many times unable to see or talk to one another for great stretches of time due to life's sometimes capricious turns. But as a testament to the man Richard was, his son Jaric told me "He was always warm and loving. Even after months or years of not seeing him, there was never a single moment when I was with him that I thought he didn't care about me. There was never a single moment that I was uncomfortable around him. And that's a hard thing to do with the relationship we had". That was our brother Richard, or Rick to his friends. To know him was to love him. And he loved you back fiercely and completely. We will all truly miss his physical presence, but his memory is vivid in our hearts and within his son. Richard is survived by his son Jaric DeHart, his beloved common law wife of 12 ½ years Leanne Nelson, Brothers Chuck (Robin) DeHart and Donald DeHart, Sister Elaine (Ron) Schalla and Joan DeHart, the mother of his son. He was predeceased by both parents and all grandparents. Richard had a great love for all animals but especially the cats he fostered over the years. It is requested that he be remembered not by flowers but thru donations made to the Benton County or King County Humane Societies. Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home of Kennewick is handling the arrangements, with burial to be at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, Kennewick, WA. A private memorial is planned for Wednesday, July 27, 2016.
