Regina Jean Haldeman passed away May 19, 2008 surrounded by loved ones. She was born October 27, 1917, the third child of Joseph and Mary Sigl Schroeder. Her parents farmed near Lefor, ND. When she was one year old, her Father died in the 1918 flu epidemic. A few months later her Mother married Joseph Kappel combining the two families now with seven children. They later had five sons. Mother attended school in Dickinson and Gladstone, ND. She remembers it was a sad day when they moved to a farm outside of Gladstone. The work was endless but the family endured and had a unique closeness. In spring 1937 Mother went to Spokane, WA to help her married Sister. There, at a German hall, she met Bruce Haldeman, and they married June 23, 1938. They were married sixty one years living mostly in Yakima and moving to Canyon Lakes in Kennewick in 1998 to be nearer family. Mother was a private person and always kept her mind busy reading the newspaper, working crossword and word puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She loved games. Her favorite was pinochle and she loved to win! She also enjoyed country music especially Eddy Arnold. Other favorites were her dolls, steak, Chinese food, Kentucky fried chicken, and a trip to Granny's Buffet. Mother spent a short time of her life helping Dad do store invoicing and also she worked taking tickets at the Central Washington Fair for fifteen years. She loved her homes and decorating with her many "treasures". She loved gardening and had showcase yards. Her favorites were roses, especially miniature roses. She loved fresh flowers in her home. What a "green" thumb she had. She could grow anything, and house plants thrived. Mother started bowling in her late 40's and was still bowling at eighty! She was in several leagues and tournaments winning many awards and even bowling a 600 series. During this time she and our Dad kept busy camping, especially to Curlew Lake, dancing, and attending Yakima Bear games. She was the ultimate Mariner's fan. She was a beautiful lady who loved her clothing and jewelry pins and bracelets. Most of all, she was a devoted Mother, making my Sister and I and grandchildren the center of her life. We were her entertainment. We were blessed to spend time together taking trips like to Las Vegas, North Dakota, or Hawaii and attending many concerts. A special time for her and us was the surprise 90th birthday party we celebrated on our 50th wedding anniversary last fall. Mother is survived by her daughters and husbands, Ron and Myrene Northey of Kennewick and Marcella and Duane Weber of Bonney Lake, WA; her brothers and their families, Herb Kappel of Fargo, ND, Richard Kappel of Dickinson, ND, Bill Kappel of Puyallup, WA , five grandchildren, Pamela Northey, Portland, OR; Jenna Higley and husband, Andy, Meridian, ID; Christina Ferguson and husband, Brad, Kennewick, WA, Derek Weber, Bonney Lake, WA; and Dylan Weber and wife, Tawni, Bonney Lake, WA and nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and eight siblings. The family would like to thank The Manor at Canyon Lakes for her wonderful past 5 ½ years. Also, thanks to Dr. Cain, Pastor Marty Armstrong of Cathedral of Joy, and Canyon Lake Restorative Center for their care in the final days of her life. A family graveside service will be held June 8 at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Kennewick in remembrance of both Mother and Father. Memorial contributions may be made to Cathedral of Joy Gardens.
