Obituary

Ray D. Benson passed away peacefully on February 5, 2018 at home surrounded by family. He was born on August 1, 1930 in Douthat, Oklahoma to Charley and Edna Benson. He served in the U.S. Air Force and went on to work at the Hanford Nuclear Site until his retirement in 1989. Early in his career at Hanford he met his wife of 61 years, Delores, and they were married on December 22, 1956. He enjoyed supporting his community with his wife, participating in the Kennewick Police Department CHIPs and being a proud season ticket holder of the Tri-City Americans for over 20 years. Ray and Dee enjoyed traveling with friends to Arizona, where he attended auto auctions, baseball spring training, and keeping score for his softball team. Ray's interests included vintage autos, riding his Honda scooter, bowling, painting, and playing cards and working puzzles with friends and family. He remained sharp, witty, generous, and creative in thought throughout his life. Ray's beloved and loyal kitty companion, Missy, always by his side, brought joy and laughter to all of his days. Ray is survived by his wife Delores, daughters Sharon (Burt) Tyler, Linda (Jeff) DeLine, and son Bennie (Peggy) Harrow; and many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was the best husband, daddy, grandpa, great grandpa, and friend one could wish for. Also surviving are his brothers Vernon and Dale and his sister Mary. Preceding him in death are his parents and his brother Wayne. Ray's family gives deepest thanks to his personal caregiver Jody Kennedy, his physician Dr. Pat Hamner, and the wonderful hospice team, who treated him and his family like their own. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Chaplaincy Health Care. A private family service is planned, and a celebration of Ray's life will be scheduled at a later date.
