After a long and magnificently-lived life, our father, Grandpa, and friend Ralph Nelson Burt has died at the age of 103 on November 18. He was born May 9, 1905 to Wallace and Mamie Burt, who were then LDS missionaries in the Sandwich Islands later Hawaii. Ralph was a remarkable man who was kind, self-educated, and internet-savvy. He loved to laugh and play with children. His quick wit and gentle spirit will be greatly missed. One very important part of Ralph's life was his strong faith. As a father, husband, and friend, he made a determined choice to follow the example of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was fair, gentle, never harsh or punitive. He was generous to those in need, and he donated land so that chapels could be built. He also had a special love of temple work and uniting families forever. Ralph farmed well into his 70's, and lived in the Tri-Cities since 1943. He came here as a carpenter but later started a second career in farming when he purchased land in south Kennewick. His family was his treasure, especially Lorene, his cherished wife of 67 years. Ralph's longevity was due to Lorene and the love and devotion that they shared. Ralph is survived by his eternal companion, Lorene, and eight children who were privileged to have him as their father: Sandra Dave Szendre; Wally Janice Burt; Larry Kerry Burt; Ron Charyse Burt, Diane Ben Card of Mapleton, UT; Shirlene Dave Stoddard of Pendleton, OR; Clifton Terri Burt; and Jerry Marjo Burt. Ralph and Lorene also have 31 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren and counting. The family would like to thank everyone that made it possible for Ralph to live at home his final years. We would also like to thank the wonderful and compassionate visiting nurses of Hospice. A funeral commemorating Ralph's life will be held at 10:30 AM at the LDS chapel Olympia Building, Kennewick, on Saturday, November 22, 2008. Viewing will be held one hour before the service at 9:30. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider honoring the love of Ralph's life by paying a visit to Lorene during the lonely months ahead. We honor you and we miss you, Dad, Grandpa, and friend.
