Peggy Joyce Gillham Norton Green, 80, died after a prolonged illness on January 14, 2011 at the home of her daughter in Pasco. Peggy was born May 11, 1930 in Plainview, Arkansas, daughter of Louis L. Gillham and Ina Dale Norman. Her youth was spent mostly in Hot Springs and Plainview, Arkansas; and logging camps in Arizona and McFee, Colorado. She was a hard worker, helping feed the loggers and doing housekeeping at a very young age. Her family moved to El Cerrito, California in 1947. She married Kenneth Merle Norton, a plumber, on November 21, 1948 and they lived in El Sobrante, California. Peggy worked as a telephone operator and a long lines supervisor and trainer. Their son, Jack, was born October 3, 1953. They later moved to Concord, California where they were foster parents for several years. Deciding to go back to school she received an Associate of Arts degree from Merritt College in Oakland and became an x-ray technologist. She enjoyed this work very much and was very good at it. Merle passed away on March 12, 1974 and Peggy married Jack Heber Green, a building inspector, on July 5, 1975 in the Oakland California Mormon Temple. They moved to Pleasant Hill, California. After Jack retired, he and Peggy traveled extensively, seeing much of the United States and the world. Jack and Peggy moved to Salt Lake City in 1984 and that became their home base. Health concerns brought them to the Tri-Cities in 2007. Jack passed away July 20, 2007. Peggy had joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on February 15, 1958 and was an active member. She was a Cub Scout leader for many years, taught early morning seminary, served in Primary and Relief Society callings. She and Jack also worked in the Oakland California Temple and were missionaries in South Dakota from February 1977 through August 1978. She was always happiest when she was busy. Peggy liked to sing. She and her sisters and brother sang on a local radio show as kids and she sang in church choirs for many years. She was also an avid bowler. Peggy was also a terrific cook, excelling at the southern dishes she'd learned to prepare as a child. She also had a knack for making a house into a welcoming home. Family was her most important priority and she was a great wife, mom, grandma, and great-grandma. Peggy is survived by her son, Jack Norton, and her stepdaughter, Cindy Bleazard, fourteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sister, Eugenia Kraus. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Kenneth Merle Norton and Jack Heber Green, and sister Sue Coshow. Viewing will be Tuesday, January 18th, 2011, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home located at 1401 S. Union Street, Kennewick. Graveside services will be Friday, January 21, 2011 at the Salt Lake City Cemetery in Utah.
