Paul Jay Meyer died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on June 7, 2008. Paul was born October 22, 1926 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Jona and Rosa Meyer. Paul spent the majority of his youth in Arkansas City, Kansas. He was one of four brothers. At the age of 17 Paul enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Asian Pacific campaign and with the occupation forces in China, receiving the Purple Heart for injuries received in the battle of Peleiu Island. Corporal Meyer was honorably discharged on February 19, 1946. After his discharge he returned home and graduated from high school and attended Arkansas City Junior College. He was a man of determination, which served him well when he married his wife, Joann Hughes. After returning from the service, he nudged out a competitor for her hand whose ring she was wearing. Paul called her from the train depot to threaten re-enlistment that very day unless she came down to meet him. They were married six months later on August 18, 1946 and enjoyed life together for 61 years. In 1951, the Meyer's moved to the Tri-Cities where he entered the grocery business. He spent 40 years in the grocery business, managing and supervising stores in the Tri-Cities, ending his career by owning his own store, Meyer's Market, in Kennewick. He was very active in community affairs, including being a past Tri-City Chamber of Commerce President, a member of the Tri-City Country Club, and a board member of the Washington State Food Dealers. He retired in 1990 and enjoyed his retirement on the golf course. Paul was very devoted to his wife and five children. He is survived by his loving wife, Joann Meyer Pasco, Monica and Don Lamb Pasco, Bruce and Mary Meyer, Brad Meyer both from Murrieta, CA, Rod and Cari Meyer Boise, ID, and Mindy and Gerry Galbreath Modesto, CA. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He died like he lived, "He never gave up the fight." In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice.
