Patricia Louise Dowell peacefully went home to be with the Lord on August 5th, 2016. She was 90 years old. Mom believed in God's promises and lived a life full of days. She was the granddaughter of Norwegian immigrants Mina and Pedr Tomseth who passed through Ellis Island around the turn of the 20th century. The Tomseths settled in Oregon's Willamette Valley amongst other family members. One of the early family homes, the Tomseth House, is on the National Historic Registry and located on the Dorris Ranch in Springfield, Oregon. Mom grew up in a self-reliant, hard-working, tight-knit family that celebrated their Norwegian roots (Sons of Norway) and embraced the American Dream. Mom was born February 7, 1926 to Henry and Edith (Peggy) Tomseth. She grew up in the valley and graduated from Springfield High in 1944. After attending the University of Oregon for two years, she went to work for the telephone company. In 1951 she married the love of her life, a local college scholarship athlete, Howard Dowell. Over the years they raised three children and loved each other for a life-time. In 1962 they moved to Arizona before finally settling in Kennewick in 1967. After raising her children, she worked at Hawthorne Elementary for many years and made many lasting friendships. Mom loved creating bulletin board displays and helping children in the classroom. She was also a gifted cake-maker who delighted her grandkids with fun, ornate birthday cakes. In her 70's, she eventually retired to help Dad whose health had begun to fail. She faithfully cared for him at home until he had to be admitted to a long-term care facility. Over the next 6 years she took the bus each day (she refused to get a driver's license) to see him. After Dad's death in 2006, she filled the void in her life with gardening, an occasional college TV basketball game (it reminded her of Dad), the company of her many friends and her beloved Labrador, Daisy. In 2013 Mom's health began to fail and she had to enter a care facility where she lived the last two years of her life. Much thanks to the Richland Rehabilitation Center and Peace of Mind in Richland for your many kindnesses and attentive care of Mom. She is survived by sons Chris Dowell (Kennewick) and Patrick (Jennifer)Dowell (Vancouver) and daughter Julie (Dan) Westermeyer (Kennewick) as well as 9 grandsons and two great-grandchildren. Mom, well done. We love you and miss you already. In the fullness of time, we will see you soon. A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church located at 2505 W. 27th in Kennewick on Saturday August 13 at 2:00pm with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Benton Franklin Humane Society.
