Max E. "Papa" Brewer of Kennewick, Washington passed away peacefully at Callaway Gardens August 4, 2010. He was born October 15, 1929 in Fort Benton, Montana to proud parents, Lawrence and Lillian Brewer. The family moved to "Old" Richland while Max was just a small boy. Max grew up with his younger sister, Donna "Sissie" as Max nicknamed her farming and raising sheep, cattle, horses, rabbits, dogs and chickens. They lived there until 1944 when the government bought their home for the Hanford Reservation. Upon entering elementary school, Max made what would be his best and lifelong friend, Vern McGhan. The two enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding, school sports and many other special times. Max was a 1948 Kennewick High graduate where he enjoyed baseball and basketball. As a sophomore he and his team won the State Championship Title. Max and his high school sweetheart, June Higgins, married on January 29, 1951 in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. Soon after his marriage, Max joined the U.S. Army and served proudly from 1951 to 1953 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Shortly after, the family moved back to their roots in the Tri-Cities. Max and June became parents to a son, Craig, in 1953. They began farming what is now known as Panoramic Heights and Badger Canyon. A second son, Curt Bradly, was born in 1955, followed by a daughter, Tanya Marie, in 1961. In addition to working the farm, Max also worked for the City of Richland as a fireman from 1954 to 1974. He then worked for United Engineers as a Safety Engineer from 1977 to 1982. Max was a devoted and dependable dad who always made time for his children. With Craig and Curt there were numerous sports including motorcycle races, hunting, and fishing trips. With Tanya, Max took time for her baton twirling parades, fishing and showed her how to be a "Master Gardener" like her father. Max was known to be an excellent hunter and fisherman. He had a strong passion for the outdoors. He loved the mountain air and always wanted to move back to the mountains of Montana. He spent many of his years camping, hunting and fishing in Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Washington. He has many trophies and taxidermy displays in his "den" at home including a 10-lb 31-inch peacock bass he caught in Venezuela while visiting good friend Bob DeLarm. He also loved to fish sturgeon and was known for making the best smoked sturgeon around! He was a man of all trades, a true man's man. His hobbies and trades included: taxidermy, carpentry he built his own home, farming, gardening he took care of over 200 rose bushes and numerous varieties of other flowers, leather tooling, picture framing, antique shopping, and refinishing furniture. He loved the game of pinochle. Max was always proud of his mother's Norwegian and father's Indian heritage. Family and roots were very important to him and he valued his "own" above all. His grandchildren are grateful to their "Papa" for the time and generosity he showered upon them throughout their lives. When looking at Max's life, you see a man who "did it all". He lived with no regrets and fulfilled his dreams and desires. He invested into the next generation while depositing into his own. Max was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and Lawrence Brewer. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, June Brewer of Kennewick; son, Craig Diane Brewer of Kennewick; son, Curt Elaine Brewer of Desert Aire; daughter, Tanya Rick Gillard of Williams Lake; and sister Donna Milo Bauder of Richland.
