Mary passed away peacefully the morning of July 10, 2010 in Kennewick, WA at the age of 97. Mary was born December 19, 1912 in Denver, Colorado to Parents Steve and Grace Newton. She grew up on the Newton Sanitary Dairy in the Denver area which was the family dairy farm with two older brothers, Robert and Steve. Mary's father had the first gasoline powered milk truck in Denver in 1916. She graduated from Union High School as Salutatorian in Adams City, Colorado in 1931 with a scholarship to the University of Denver, School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance. She married her long time sweetheart, William B. Zilar, October 19, 1932 in Denver. They spent time with college, worked and resided in the Denver area and raised three sons: Bill Jr., Dick and John. Upon hearing about the WWII effort at the Hanford site in Washington, Dad applied for a job and was selected to be employed as a Machinist. Mary followed her husband to Richland, Washington with the three young boys, arriving on Decoration Day of 1944. She enjoyed raising her boys, gardening, sewing and baking, especially apple pies. In 1946, a fourth boy, Larry, was born in Richland. She kept busy with her husband, four sons, other families who moved here making many friends. She was a full time housewife taking on several part time jobs to help the family income. Mary and Bill ran a Ceramic business for several years and Mary created some of the most beautiful lace dolls you have seen. She did needlepoint and sewed clothing for family and friends. She couldn't be idle and was always getting involved with crafts or playing cards. Mary and Bill liked to spend their weekends playing Pinochle with some life long friends. Mary continued to play Pinochle with her girls club until the age of 96. She always looked forward to spending time with her girlfriends. Mary knew God and was an active member of the Catholic Church. She was an active member of Christ the King until 1955 and upon moving to Kennewick became active at St. Josephs. When the Holy Spirit Parish was built in Kennewick, she was a charter member. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, William Bill Zilar and her son, Richard Dick Zilar. Also preceding her in death were her Mother Grace, Father Steve, Brother Robert and Brother Steve. She is survived by her 3 sons, their wives and daughter-in-law: William B. Norma Zilar Jr., John A. Linda Zilar and Larry J. Mary Zilar and daughter-in-law, Sherril Zilar. There are also 17 Grandchildren, 46 Great-Grandchildren and numerous Great-Great-Grandchildren. She is also survived by her close Nephews, Robert Marcie Newton, Bill Edna Newton, Herbert Pina Newton and Niece, Irene Newton Young. Visitation will be from 3 PM to 8 PM, with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7 PM on Sunday July 18 at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home located at 1401 S. Union St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at The Parish of the Holy Spirit at 11 AM on Monday July 19 with lunch reception to follow. The Rite of Christian Burial will follow at 1:30 PM at Desert Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to Hospice at The Chaplaincy, 2108 W. Entiat Ave., Kennewick, WA 99336.
