Mary Eva Riggs Smith passed on June 26, 2019 in Richland, Washington. She lived in Kennewick, Washington with her eternal companion Nathan Lewis Smith Sr. for the past 14 years. Mary was born in Cove City, North Carolina to Mary Irene Jarman and William Marvin Riggs. She was the eldest of Marvin and Irene. She had 3 older half siblings, Janice, David and Margie. She has 3 siblings, Joanne, Billy and Rogers. She is survived by her youngest brother, Rogers. Mary married her true love Nathan Lewis Smith Sr. on July 17, 1953 in New Bern, North Carolina. Mary is a beloved mother, dedicated wife and loving Grandmother and Great Grandmother. She is the mother to 4 children, Mary Lou, Nathan Lewis Jr, Treca Darlene and Nancy Caroline. In 2007 Lewis and Mary adopted their great grandson Austin Tayler Young-Smith when he was 8 years old. They were loving parents to him throughout his childhood. She is the grandmother to 18 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1953 which was 1 year after her husband joined the church. Mary was a dedicated genealogist who published 5 family history books. They have been distributed in libraries throughout the east coast. She and her husband served multiple missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. One being in Martins Cove in Wyoming. The other in Salt Lake City, Utah for the Family History Center, dedicated to the decedents of Ellis Island. Mary went to Elizabeth City, North Carolina for the week to attend nursing school. She would return home each weekend to be with her family. She did this for a year and received her nursing degree in 1962. She was a nurse for over 35 years and continued to be a nurse to her family for the rest of her life. She loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and dedicated her life to serving and sharing the gospel. She loved her family with all her heart and often gave sound advice throughout her life to her children and grandchildren. She lived her life focused on her family and the gospel. She was loving and friendly and touched those she met with her kindness and love.
