Mary was born April 7, 1924, in Montana, where she graduated from Chinook High School in May 1941. She married Don Newby in September 1944 in Mt. Vernon, WA, where he was stationed for Naval Air Training. He was due to go overseas so she returned to Montana where she was employed as assistant to the County Superintendent of Schools, covering 14 country school districts. After Don's return from overseas, they moved to Bozeman, Montana, where they lived for four years while he attended Montana State University. She was employed there as a bank teller and later as a secretary for the Montana State Extension Service. She came to Richland, Washington, in 1951 where Don was employed at Hanford for 34 years. A son was born in Richland, but was lost at birth due to complications. She was active in Richland in the League of Women Voters, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and The Westside Church. An off-site assignment took them to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1953, where son Roger was born and Mary was temporarily active in the Pittsburgh Toastmistress Club. Their return to Richland became somewhat adventurous and scary when they were stalled in a late spring blizzard, but were eventually rescued by angels in the disguise of a snowplow crew. The following years in Richland brought the tragedy of losing another son to birth complications, but with doctors' assurances and renewed faith, son Dennis arrived without problems two years later. During Richland's transition to becoming an incorporated city, the family bought a home in Sunnyside, Washington, and spent eight years there, where Mary was active in the Federated Women's Club, parent teacher organizations and the Sunnyside Presbyterian Church. They were blessed there with daughter Rhonda's arrival in 1959. They returned to the Tri-Cities in 1965, where Mary pursued further education, earning an associate degree at Columbia Basin College and completing courses through Central Washington University. She was employed at Battelle Northwest from 1972 to 1986, retiring as an administrative specialist. At her death she was active in AQ Chapter of PEO and the First Presbyterian Church of Kennewick. She is survived by: Daughter Rhonda Solis, Richland; son Roger Newby, Seattle; son Dennis Newby and daughter-in-law Sue, Knoxville, Tennessee; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one brother, Kenny MacLean, in Chinook, Montana; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Annie MacLean of Montana; brothers Murdo and Angus of Montana; two infant sons, and her devoted husband, Don Newby, of Kennewick. After private burial services, a Memorial Service will be held at Kennewick First Presbyterian Church, 2001 W. Kennewick Ave., this Saturday, October 27th, at 4 p.m. A reception will follow at the church. Memorials may be made in her honor to Kennewick First Presbyterian Church or Tri-City Chaplaincy, Hospice House, 2108 W. Entiat, Kennewick, WA, 99336.
