Obituary

Our beloved mom was born in Gainesville, Texas on September 8, 1916 to Albert B. and Lillie Mae Findley. She was the youngest of three children. Following in her mother's footsteps, mom became a school teacher. She began her teaching career in Port Arthur, Texas where she taught in a one room school house for three years. In 1940, mom married our dad, James T. Fleming in Dallas, Texas. They moved to Pasco, WA by way of St. Louis and Las Vegas. They followed the construction boom created by the war effort so dad could pursue his trade as a bricklayer. Mom took time out from teaching to stay home with their four children. It wasn't until after the youngest one started school that she resumed her teaching career with a position in the Kennewick School District; thus beginning her 26 year career teaching in the primary grades. Teaching was the joy of her life. She always loved telling people she never made it past the second grade. Working with children was something Mom loved and is why she also became a Den Mother during the time her sons were involved in the Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs. Mom loved working in her yard especially with her flowers. She loved her irises and roses. She died on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the Guardian Angel Home in Richland, WA with her children at her side at the age of 91. Preceding mom in death were our dad, James T. Fleming, her parents of Gainesville, Texas; brother Morris Findley of Denison, Texas; sister Margaret Coats of Plano, Texas; daughter-in-law Cleo Marie Fleming of Moscow, ID; and son-in-law Tom Van Lear of Burbank, WA. She is survived by sister-in-law Mary Findley of Denison, Texas; sons Thomas A. Fleming of Moscow, ID, William Patrick Pat Fleming of Kennewick, WA; daughters Jimmie Marie Jim Jensen of Richland, WA, and Nell Van Lear of Burbank, WA; eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. The family of Betty Fleming would like to thank the staff of The Guardian Angel Home of Richland, WA for their loving care of our mom and the help and concern they showed to our family. We would also like to thank Hospice for their exceptional help and support during this difficult time. There will be a Graveside service honoring mom at Desert Lawn Memorial Park on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 10:30a.m. located at 10th and Union in Kennewick. Alfred Rizzo, Deacon for Christ the King Church of Richland will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, it would be very much appreciated if you would make a donation to Hospice in Mom's name, she would like that. Rest well MOM, we love you!
