Mabel Alice Hodgson, 99, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at the Canyon Lakes Rehabilitation Center in Kennewick. Mabel was born August 14, 1915 in Addy, Washington to Ole and Julia Johnson. She spent her early years in the Blue Creek area, near Addy, where her parents had homesteaded. Mabel's family moved to Finley during the depression years where her father farmed. Mabel picked fruit, cut asparagus, milked cows, fed and cared for the other livestock along with her older brother Joe, and younger brothers George, Walter, and Donald. Mabel always liked picking fruit but, while very proficient, never did like milking the cows. During her high school years, Mabel earned a letter playing varsity basketball. After graduation from Hover High School in 1934, Mabel earned a scholarship to attend Kinman Business University and later attended Carson's Beauty College in Tacoma. Mabel worked for I&I Beauty Supply, in Kennewick, for many years. Mabel married Floyd W. Hodgson on October 26, 1937. Floyd and Mabel started their married life together in Walla Walla, Washington where Floyd was employed by the Walla Walla Steam Laundry and Dry Cleaning Company. Floyd and Mabel moved Kennewick in 1943 where they owned and operated the Columbia Market located on Avenue C. Later, Floyd and Mabel both worked for Jones Lockers, in Kennewick, for many years. Together they were blessed with four children (Joyce, John, Joe, and Jim). Mabel was a very loving, energetic, and hard working wife, and mother. Mabel managed the home, raised and cared for the children while assisting Floyd in his business and farming ventures. Mabel had a reputation as a fine cook particularly with regard to her homemade breads and pies. Mabel made sure that each of her children was proficient in cooking, washing and ironing, sewing, and all manner of house work. Mabel was a 4H Club leader, for a number of years, and her club members were very successful as evidenced by the number of ribbons and awards earned at the local and state fairs. Mabel was an active member of the Kennewick Methodist Church, Kennewick Eagles, Kennewick Senior Center, East Benton Historical Society, Rambling Rovers, Pasco Promenaders, and the Benton County Election Board. Mabel was preceded in death by her husband Floyd, brothers Joseph, George, Walter, and Donald. She was also preceded in death by her son Joseph (Jan). She is survived by her daughter Joyce (Bob), son John (Doris), son Jim (Marilyn) as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren. The family will be eternally grateful for the kind and loving care provided by the administration and staff of the Canyon Lakes Rehabilitation Center. The family would also like to thank the Chaplaincy Palliative Care Service for the emotional and practical support provided to both Mabel and her family. Mabel's Celebration of Live Service is scheduled for 11:30 AM, Wednesday October 15, 2014 at the Kennewick Methodist Church located at 421 West Kennewick Avenue. The Celebration of Live Service will be preceded by a brief graveside service for members of the family. Interment will be at the Desert Lawn Cemetery located near 10th and Union streets in Kennewick.
