Obituary

Luvena Marie Maulden passed away June 29, 2018 in Pasco, Washington. She was born on December 8, 1921 in White Salmon, Washington to William and Orva (Maine) Arnett. She attended the Gilmer School, a one room school with one teacher for grades 1-8, and then high school in White Salmon. After graduating with the class of 1938 at the age of 16, Luvena returned for another year as a "post graduate" student because her parents felt she was too young to head off to college. After high school, she attended Washington State College (WSU), where she met James Forrest Maulden, whom she married on January 5, 1942 in Visalia, California. They lived in San Jose, California until September 1942, when Jim was drafted into the Army. Luvena, expecting their first child, moved in with her parents while her husband was away at basic training. Their first child, Kenny, was born in November 1942, while Jim was away at basic training. While Jim was in the Army, they spent time in Walla Walla, Washington and Medford, Oregon before Jim's unit was ordered overseas in March 1944. Luvena and their son, Kenny, moved back in with Luvena's parents while Jim was in England during WWII. Their daughter, Shirley, was born in April 1944, shortly after Jim was shipped overseas. After Jim returned home in December 1945, the family settled in Grandview, Washington, and began farming a five-acre apple orchard. Their third child, Janice, was born in November, 1947. In 1955, they moved to a larger home on Cherry Lane in Grandview, and in 1973 returned to the original five-acre property on Appleway, where they built a new home. Their orchard operation expanded to 72 acres of apples, pears, cherries, and grapes, which they farmed until 1997. Luvena started working in the office of the local frozen food plant in 1952, then moved to the Welch Foods office in 1953. The office of the National Grape Co-operative (owner of Welch's) expanded their field office, and Luvena continued to work there until her retirement in 1993. Jim and Luvena were active in Eastern Star and Amaranth for several decades. Luvena received three state appointments and served as Worthy Matron three times for Eastern Star. Luvena also served as Royal Matron of Amaranth. They continued to be active in the fraternal groups after moving to the Tri-Cities in 1999. In the Tri-Cities, they lived for several years at the Manor at Canyon Lakes, a retirement community in Kennewick, and became members of the Kennewick United First Methodist Church. Luvena was very kind and generous. She was always smiling and could often be found working on a crochet project or a crossword puzzle. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, younger brother, William Harold Arnett and his wife, Mary, and son-in-law, Danny Morasch. She is survived by her son, Kenny Maulden, daughter, Shirley Morasch, daughter, Janice Brasher and husband Michael. She also leaves grandchildren David Morasch and wife Jennifer, Brian Morasch and wife Melissa, Kayla Brant, Kim Boudreaux, and Jim Brasher, 13 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, July 13, 2018 at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union St., Kennewick, Washington. Memorial donations may be made to charity of your choice.
