Obituary

Lucille was born August 9, 1924, to William F. and Gladys Sharrah Stroud, in Cottage Grove, Oregon. Lucille joined her beloved husband John T. ?Shorty? Cloninger and all the Heavenly Hosts on July 12, 2009, in the comfort of her home and the arms of her family. A life-long resident of this area, Lucille graduated from high school at the old Hanford town site. She worked at the Big Pasco supply and distribution point during World War II where she met Shorty. The couple married in 1946 and lived in Kennewick. Their home was the ?meeting place? for a large extended family. Lucille was a devoted wife and mother. She was Shorty?s camping and fishing companion?and usually brought home the biggest fish. She loved working in her garden, sewing for her family, and baking ?the best? cookies and pies. She welcomed every new baby into the extended family with a beautifully crocheted or knitted blanket. She was working on her 197th beanie for the church?s outreach to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. She was a state championship bowler in her younger years. In later years, she looked forward to playing pinochle with life-long friends and was an avid Mariners fan. She worked at Washington Hardware and Furniture during the 1960s. Lucille was preceded in death by her parents and husband; sisters, Luella Gest and Helen Widstrand; brother, Russell Stroud; and daughter-in-law, Mollee Smith Cloninger. She is survived by her children, Steven Mary Cloninger and Kathy Sol Freeman; grandchildren, Chris Autumn Cloninger; Dan Beth Cloninger; Sol John Melissa Jones Freeman; ten great-grandchildren; sisters, May Ray Darrow, Rhoda Snider, Laura Kreig; brother, Floyd Romane Stroud; and many nieces and nephews. Lucille?s life will be celebrated on Friday, July 17, with burial at 10:30 a.m. at Desert Lawn Memorial Cemetery and a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. at Kennewick First Methodist Church. A light lunch will be served following the service. The family thanks the ?angels? of Tri-Cities Hospice for the support that allowed Lucille to spend her final days on earth in the home she dearly loved and requests that donations be made to Hospice in lieu of flowers.
