Obituary

Kenneth passed away in Dateland, AZ, where he lived since retiring in 1983. Born in Austin, Tx, Ken came to Kennewick at age 3 with his parents Frederick Julius Jr and Ellen Julius-Rohrer. The family joined his grandfather Fred "Pop" Julius Sr. where both elders worked on the Hanford Project. Ken enjoyed playing in his grandpa's cherry orchard along the Columbia River (now Columbia Park). Ken loved animals, having many during his lifetime.

Ken graduated from Kennewick High School in 1959. After receiving a drafting certificate from Columbia Basin College, he joined the US Coast Guard in 1963 and was assigned to Groton, CN. He continued his drafting work designing base facilities until his 1967 discharge, when he returned to Kennewick to work at the Hanford 200 Area. Ken had many talents and always had a job -- from heavy equipment repair, carpentry, farming, to 15 years working on nuclear plant outages along the east coast, Florida, and in Taiwan.

Ken leaves behind son Todd Hamm and family (Guam), sister Sharon Julius-Kophs (Olympia), nephews Eric Kophs (d. 2009), Tiffany & Ryan Kophs (Denver), Jeff Kophs (Michele) and their family (Boise Id), along with his many friends in Dateland.

In Dateland, Ken was known for his artistic talents. He enjoyed singing karaoke at Our Place, a gathering center in the small community. With no cemetery, Ken built large remembrance crosses for friends who passed. Many crosses now stand on the hill across from Our Place. Ken was interred at Mueller's cemetery with his mother Ellen Rohrer.
