Obituary

Katherine Ann Weinbender was born June 9, 1944 in Fort Wayne, CO to Elizabeth and John Weinbender. She was the third child of four. The family left Colorado and made their way to Sunnyside, WA where she eventually met the love of her life, Dick DeGraaf, Jr., while searching for her earring under a table at the Safari Room. The couple married on November 29, 1969 and had two children: Christopher, in 1971, and Jonathan, in 1973. Katherine was an involved and loving mother to her boys. She was a frequent volunteer at Edison Elementary School and an unpaid taxi driver who shuttled her kids to activities and proudly watched them in their after school sports, such as soccer, baseball, and wrestling. Jonathan married Heather in 1994, and Katherine gained her first daughter. Christopher married his wife, Anna, a couple months later and the family grew by one more. Dick and Kathy were regular visitors to the Seattle area during Chris and Anna's time there and made many happy memories sightseeing and traveling to surrounding areas. Katherine particularly enjoyed the huge tulip fields in Skagit County. Another honorary daughter came into Katherine's family with the addition of Danielle. Katherine loved spending time with her family. Katherine's grandchildren were the light of her life. She and Dick became grandparents with the birth of Alyssa in 1998. Taylor and Lily followed in 2000 and, suddenly, Katherine found herself with a life full of girls. The girls loved shopping, coloring, and watching Strawberry Shortcake with Grandma. 2004 brought a boy, Liam, into the mix. Hallway soccer, Chinese checkers, and The Wiggles took over. Grandma Kathy was deeply loved by her grandchildren. Katherine left this earth on September 19th, 2016 after a brief battle with acute Leukemia. She is survived by her loving husband, Dick; sons, Christopher (Anna) of Richland and Jonathan (Danielle) of Kennewick; grandchildren Alyssa, Taylor, Lily, and Liam; siblings Marie (Jack) of Roseburg, OR; Jerry of Coeur d'Alene, ID; and Emma (Jack) of Selah, WA; and many nieces and nephews. She was loved and will be missed. A memorial service celebrating Katherine's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 2nd at Bethlehem Lutheran Church (2505 West 27th Avenue, Kennewick). Donations in Katherine's memory may be made to one of her two favorite charities: The Union Gospel Mission and The Trios Foundation (especially in the areas of cancer care and treatment).
