Josephine "Josie" Evoniuk, 94 of Kennewick, passed away July 20, 2010 at Hospice at the Chaplaincy in Kennewick, WA. She was born to the late Lenora and Joseph Gregoratti December 18, 1915, in Gretna Louisiana, along with one brother and four sisters. Josie graduated from Hotel Dieu in 1939 as an RN, and immediately joined the Army as a nurse during World War II. She accomplished many things, including the opening of the Port of Embarkation in New Orleans. She also met and married Julian Evoniuk, a North Dakota farm boy in 1943. They lived in Gretna where they operated the E & G Pharmacy and raised their two daughters. In 1989 Julian passed away, and shortly thereafter Josie began to alternate winters and summers between Ponchatoula, LA and Kennewick, WA. In 2008, Josie moved permanently to Kennewick. Josie was a dedicated nurse, a loving wife and mother, and a wonderful grandmother. She was a faithful parishioner of The Parish of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church. She enjoyed reading, going out with the girls, and giving advice to her family. She was elegant, charming, and very determined. Josie is survived by her daughters: Julianne Jack Barnaby of Kennewick, WA., and Phyllis Larry May of Ponchatoula, LA. She also is survived by four grandchildren: Theresa Barnaby of Kennewick, WA, Damon Cory Barnaby of Tucson, AZ, John Michal May of Washington D.C. and Shannon Michael May Mohr of New York, NY, and niece Maureen Lundergan of Ponchatoula, LA. Josie was preceded in death by her husband and all of her siblings. Josie was a force to be reckoned with, and our family is richer for having had her in our lives. She will be greatly missed by friends and family alike. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to Tri Cities Chaplaincy or Parish of the Holy Spirit. A rosary will be held Friday July 23 at 1:00pm at the Parish of the Holy Spirit with the funeral mass to follow at 2:00 pm. Internment will be in Gretna, LA.
