Everyone knew John Reed. His lineage traces back to the days of orphan trains arriving in Walla Walla and farms started from plain dirt in Finley. He was the cherished only son of James and Sally Reed, who formed John with a loving upbringing in Kennewick. His childhood was filled with days of fun on the turkey farm, go-cart racing, magical family Christmases, and adventures with many cousins. By high school, the Reeds moved to Burbank. John met his lifelong best friend Justin Homer and also found his inner confidence expressed through music. His self-declaration: "Punk rock saved my life." John's contribution to the primitive Tri-Cities' punk and alternative scene in the 1980s and 1990s is undisputed. John promoted local bands with friends Andy Monko and Sean Hayter; and if he wasn't already playing in the band, he was at the show. He frequented the fabled Hoedown Center but could also recall precisely when and where prominent national bands performed in the region. (Did you know Black Flag played in Walla Walla?) Like many Gen-X locals, John briefly moved to Seattle and then came back. He played bass guitar with Dark Party, Star Hustler, Blue Is Cold, and with the late legend Tom Gnoza in Uncle Dirt Nap. Nineteen-year-old John Reed once approached sixteen-year-old Jennifer Workinger at the mall and offered her a show flier. She was hit by the thunderbolt when she saw his blue eyes and recalls thinking, "Who IS that?" The encounter was unforgettable. John and Jennifer were later acquainted through mutual friends, but never dated. John progressed in his IT career at Energy Northwest and, for fun, traveled to Honduras, Amsterdam, and Ireland. The Lord's flawless timing brought John and Jennifer together in 2006 and daughter Hattie Jane arrived quickly afterwards. Hattie's dad cooked all her meals from scratch, mentored her musical talents, showed her the ocean for the first time, and lived every day of his vocation loving her. In 2017, John went into the hospital suffering from a heart attack and came out with irreversible kidney damage. His health journey was softened by retreating in to domestic life where he could enjoy his hobbies and his family. John continued working for the City of Kennewick to the end. The Reeds thank John's care team, most notably Dr. Mershed Alsamara, along with the staff at DaVita Dialysis Kennewick for their care. John will be laid to rest with a graveside service at Riverview Heights in Kennewick starting at 2 pm on Friday, April 26, 2024. Charitable donations honoring John Reed's memory may be given to Spectrum Studios or the Arc of Tri-Cities.
