Obituary for John Joseph Garvey Jr.

John Joseph Garvey Jr. was a force of life that will always remain with us. He was born on August 16th, 1949, in Flushing, New York, to John and Eileen Garvey. He passed away in the early hours of February 17th, 2024, surrounded by his wife, Cheryl, and sons, Travis and Ryan. John grew up in Farmingdale, Long Island, and attended St. Pius Seminary Prep and graduated from St. Dominic High School. He went on to graduate in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts from Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he studied history and played football and lacrosse. He later earned a Master's in School Administration from Heritage College. While at Springfield College, he met Cheryl Tulk, his future wife. They were married April 4th, 1975, and established their home in Kennewick, Washington, and started their family.

John was a student of life, always learning and curious about the world. His passion for learning extended into several realms. He was a skilled pipe welder with Local 598, and in 1987, changed careers to become a social studies teacher and soccer coach at Kennewick High School. During his 28 years as an educator and coach, he touched many lives. John believed in people, possibilities, and athletic self-discipline. He was a lover of books, music, beekeeping, and the beauty of nature. John was a civic-minded organizer. He served on the Kennewick City Planning Commission and led beautification projects that changed the landscape of the old Kennewick High School. Most importantly, John was a dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather.

These words cannot possibly sum up the life of such a remarkable person and all he accomplished. John is survived by his wife Cheryl and sons Travis Garvey (Molly) and Ryan Garvey (Kristin); grandchildren: Ciaran, Conor, Ashlin, Anders, and Hollace; his siblings: Ellen Anderson (John), Kevin Garvey (Kathy), Regina Garvey, Edward Garvey (Beth), Patricia Garvey, and Tom Garvey (Michelle); and 12 nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by both of his parents.

Funeral services followed by a reception will be held March 2nd, 2024, at 11 AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 7409 W Clearwater Ave., Kennewick.
