July 9, 1920 - January 26, 2006 Jared was born and raised on a farm in bucolic Custer, Wash. His Inquisitive nature led him to seek a bachelor's degree in biology at the University of Washington. Upon graduation in 1942, he enlisted in the Army and joined the troops in England and Wales serving as a medic. In 1945, he met and married the love of his life, Audrey Buchanan of Altoona, PA, and moved to Richland, WA to work as an aquatic biologist at the Hanford Labs collecting and analyzing samples along the Columbia River. His interest in entomology led him to pursue a master's degree at Washington State University. Jared enjoyed an exciting career during the infancy of nuclear science. Highlights include managing Hanford's radioecology division, an appointment to the Office of Science and Technology as one of President Johnson's Scientific Advisors and a Director for Environmental Research for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C. In 1985, Jared retired from the U.S. government and returned to Kennewick, WA to enjoy his myriad hobbies, favorite fishing buddies and extended family. His analytical mind and creative nature were well-suited for his artistic endeavors in painting pastoral scenes, fine woodworking and extreme gardening. One of Jared's friends, Cal Cushing, wrote a book The Kelly Creek Chronicles about his fly-fishing experiences. Included in Cal's memoir is the passage, 'Jared finds joy and enthusiasm in everything. His main problem is to find out how to fish while somehow bringing along his sketching pads, bug nets, and specimen vials.' When asked recently what were his favorite aspects of retirement, he replied with his customary wink and impish smile, 'Traveling with Audrey and spending time with my children.' He was a gentleman in every sense of the word and will be sorely missed by his beloved wife of 60 years, Audrey. Brother-in-law to Sarah Bollinger of Las Vegas, NV and Louise Meyer of Kennewick, WA. Cherished Uncle to Jackie & Bob Davidson, Kathy & Billy Whitt, Camille Meyer, Brett & Mandy Meyer and all of their respective children in the Tri-City area. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, 3 p.m. at Mueller's Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 1401 South Union, Kennewick, WA.
