Irene M. Atterberry Fahnholz was called home to be with her Heavenly Father on October 17, 2007. She was born September 22, 1919 in Holloke, Colorado to Louis and Anna Fahnholz. Irene graduated from a Teacher Normal Training High School in Arapahoe, Nebraska in 1937. The same year, Louis and Anna moved their family to Washington. In Kennewick, she soon found work at the Commercial Hotel. On June 27, 1940, Irene married Norman Atterberry in Missoula, Montana. They lived in Kennewick on a farm before moving to Benton City in 1945. There, they operated a Grade A dairy and cherry orchard. All the animals were always given special care. Their appearance reflected this well and was a real asset whenever they went to market. Milk the holsteins produced was sent to the Twin City Creamery in Kennewick. Fine quality cherries were raised, too. Snokist in Grandview packed and shipped them to wherever the market demanded them. Irene managed the Kiona-Benton school cafeteria from 1949-1951. Later, approximately 1973 she was a waitress and cook at the Benton City Tumbleweed Café. Sometimes customers would call ahead and ask who was cooking. If Irene was in the kitchen, they were sure to come. Irene?s gracious hospitality centered around the family dining table. She loved to cook. Family and friends have many fond memories of those delicious meals. Holidays especially were memories to be cherished. In 1997, Norman and Irene moved to a horse ranch in Kennewick. Pine and fir trees enhanced the western setting. Irene was honest and caring, often reaching out to others. She took pride in a job well done, always going that extra mile, and then some. Irene was our inspiration and we treasure the values she taught us that enriched our lives. Irene is preceded in death by her husband, Norman; her parents, Louis and Anna Fahnholz; and brother, Clifford Fahnholz. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia and son-in-law John; grandson, John Patrick and sisters Berniece Thompson and Dorothy Kassman and four nieces and 13 nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 26, 2007 at 1:00 PM at Mueller?s Tri-Cities Funeral Home 1401 S. Union, Kennewick, Washington.
