Horace "Marr" Waddoups was born to Horace Mark and Eva Thomson Merrill Waddoups in Lewiston, Utah on September 9, 1923. He passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, on October 30, 2011. He grew up on a dairy farm in Lewiston, Utah. While serving as a flight officer in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he met and married Freda Alleen Brodhead in 1945. Together they raised two sons and two daughters. Marr and Freda moved to Logan, Utah where Marr earned a Master's Degree in Plant Breeding from Utah State University, starting a 65-year career in the agricultural field. He began his career introducing modern fertilizer to many farmers. Later he was instrumental in getting the first Lima beans planted in the Columbia Basin. In 1968, he founded Marr Waddoups and Associates/Northwest Agricultural Consultants and mainstreamed scientific soil testing and consulting throughout the Columbia Basin. By bringing science to agriculture he helped farmers increase their crop yield. "Don't guess...Soil test" was his motto. He pioneered aerial infra-red photography for crop monitoring and participated in the development of center-pivot circle irrigation along the Columbia River resulting in the growing of many foods we all enjoy today. In 1979, Marr married Elizabeth "Betty" Sickles. They enjoyed 32 years of love, travel, and companionship together. Throughout his life, Marr has been active in many organizations and earned many honors. He was District Governor of Toastmaster's International and District Governor of Rotary Club. He was a Dale Carnegie instructor, a member of the Chamber of Commerce and an active participant and supporter of the Jr. Achievement Program. He has been recognized by the Boy Scouts of America many times since he became an Eagle Scout in 1942. In 1988, he was awarded the Distinguished Eagle Scout award for his lifelong commitment and support of scouting. Since retirement, Marr enjoyed his garden and fruit trees on Keene Road where he grew peaches, apples, corn and cantaloupe that he generously shared with family, friends and the Bishop's Store House. His great-grandchildren enjoyed picking blackberries and making apple cider with him. Last spring he planted nine peach trees and supervised a garden in his new, smaller yard. Over the years, he enjoyed wood working, a hobby that he has passed on to children and grandchildren. Marr was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Donald Waddoups, son-in-law, Steve Tomlinson, a nephew and two nieces. He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth; four children Marla John Werner, Gary Cynthia Waddoups, Jan Tomlinson and Jon Julie Waddoups. He also has three stepchildren Robert Terri Sickles, Cheryl Chuck Miller, and Bill Saida Sickles; grandchildren Michele Harold Walford Holden, Jeneane Conway and Jake Waddoups, Nathan and Erik Miller, Anne Alex Withers Sickles, Erin Sickles, and Billy Sickles; great-grandchildren Alexander Holden, Kellen and Andrew Walford, and Sylvia, Philip, and Elizabeth Withers-Sickles; siblings Renee Merrill, LaNeve Blaine Robinson, Jed Ann Waddoups, and Jane Paul Munns; numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank his caregivers Missy, Celesti, Amber, Lorena, and the At Home Care staff who were in their home around the clock, the doctors who cared for him, the staff at Fresenius Dialysis Center, the Tri-City Taxi Company for the rides home from dialysis, Liz and the KGH staff, and the Kadlec ICU team who cared for him on his final day of life. Viewing will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2011, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union Street, Kennewick. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 4, 2011, at 10:00 a.m., at the LDS Kennewick East Stake, 515 S.
