George Robert Coomes was born in Trace, West Virginia on July 12, 1929. At a young age, the family moved to Spokane where his father Ben's job with a mining company had taken them. Here George grew up with four sisters, Helen, Faye, Ginger, and Susan. He graduated from North Central High School in 1947. From 1949-1951, George worked for Grandview Inc., a mining company in Metaline, WA. In 1951, George enlisted in the Army. He trained at Fort Lewis, WA and his engineering battalion would be sent to the sands of Nevada. George witnessed 6 atomic bomb tests while stationed here. He became what is referred today as a "Nuclear Vet". After being honorably discharged in 1953, he returned to Spokane and attended Kinman Business College where he would meet Norma Mouda, a student there also. The two married in 1954 and had two sons, Stephen and Bradley. They lived in Pasco where George delivered milk for Twin City Creamery. George and Norma divorced in 1962. He then worked at the Bridgeview Tavern where customers always knew when George was working because of his yellow convertible parked out front! George remarried and had another son, Brett Robert Flanagan. Unfortunately, George's wife Vicky, died in a car accident and Brett would be raised by sister Helen and the Flanagan family. Well while working at the Bridgeview Tavern, he would meet Betty Walker and in 1970 the two were married. Forty-one years they were married until Betty passed in 2011. George was also a member of Local 1849, American Legion Post 34, and would retire as a custodian with the Kennewick School District. He was also a proud veteran and worked many honor guards with the American Legion. He is survived by two sisters, Sue and Ginger, his two sons, Steve and Brett, step­ daughter Mary Miles, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death, his parents Ben and Carrie, sisters Helen and Faye, his wife Betty and son Bradley. George had a great sense of humor and could always make you laugh! Rest in peace, Dad. Per his request there will be no service.
