George Wyman Buchanan, age 89, passed away on Wednesday morning, May 6, 2026, from complications following a fall on April 15, while surrounded by love and family. George's youngest daughter, Heidi, along with her boyfriend Tony, remained faithfully by his side during his final moments on earth.

George was born on August 14, 1936, in Decatur to Clarence Reid Buchanan and Sadie Ruth (Ayre) Buchanan. He grew up alongside his siblings Sara, Jan, and Dan, spending his childhood getting into his fair share of adventures — a habit he never quite outgrew.

At just seventeen years old, George joined the United States Air Force, beginning a distinguished 23-year military career that took him across the country and overseas. His assignments included Mountain Home Air Force Base, RAF Bentwaters in England, and San Bernardino, California. During the Vietnam era, George flew multiple supply missions over combat zones, serving with courage, dedication, and pride. He retired with the respected rank of Senior Master Sergeant.

Throughout his military career, George earned the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, reflecting years of honorable service and commitment to his country. One of his greatest joys was supporting the famous USO shows featuring entertainers such as Bob Hope, Ann-Margret, and football star Rosey Grier — stories he proudly shared with anyone willing to listen.

It was during an early assignment at Camp Hanford that George first came to Richland, where he met Connie Jayne Gulley. The two married in 1958 and built a life together while raising six children: Valerie, Gary, Mark, Dave, Cindy, and Heidi.

Following his retirement from the military, George and Connie settled permanently in Richland, where George worked a variety of civilian jobs, including bartending and security work at the Hanford Site.

Known affectionately by many as "Uncle Bucky," George loved bowling, competition, storytelling, and keeping people on their toes. His sense of humor was unforgettable, and his practical jokes became legendary among family and friends. One favorite story involved George growling around the house pretending to be with Bob Hope's crew in an effort to scare unsuspecting people for a laugh. The prank ended with George accidentally falling into a window well and dislocating his shoulder — a story that perfectly captured both his mischievous spirit and his total commitment to making people laugh.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Sadie Buchanan; his siblings Sara, Jan, and Dan; his wife Connie; his son Dave; and his second wife Joanne.

George is survived by his children: Valerie (Bill) of Richland; Gary (Kathy) of Texas; Mark (Laura) of Richland; daughter-in-law Mary of Montana, wife of his late son Dave; Cindy (Randy) of West Richland; and Heidi of Richland. He also leaves behind 17 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, extended family members, and many lifelong friends who will deeply miss his humor, stories, and larger-than-life personality.

George's life was one of service, laughter, adventure, resilience, and love. He leaves behind memories that will continue to bring smiles, laughter, and comfort to all who knew him.
