GAY SHEPPICK BYBEE was born July 23, 1940 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Floyd G. Sheppick and Minola Moon. She grew up on a mink ranch in South Jordan, Utah with her two older sisters, Elaine and Arlene. Gay attended West Jordan High School and graduated in 1958. While visiting cousins in Nyssa, Oregon the summer before her senior year, Gay met her future husband, Clyde W. Bybee at a baseball game. Clyde and Gay were married in the Salt Lake City Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 24, 1959. Clyde and Gay made their home outside of Nyssa on Jefferson Drive for almost 20 years. While there, they welcomed three sons into their family-Vance, Scott, and Neal. Following in the footsteps of many past generations of Bybee's; Clyde, Gay, and their boys dedicated their lives in Nyssa to farming. In 1978, Clyde and Gay moved their family to a farm outside of Prosser, Washington to begin a new adventure on the Horse Heaven Hills. For the past 30 years, Gay continued in her role as the quintessential farm wife-she worked as the farm's bookkeeper, parts-runner, substitute truck driver, and office manager. Gay was renowned for her culinary skills, and brought lots of love into her home and the homes of neighbors and friends through her cooking. Gay loved flowers and fought with the Horse Heaven wind every summer to keep a flower garden to brighten her yard. Despite her fast-paced schedule, Gay always made time to spend with her grandchildren and could be coaxed into the pool, on the back of a four-wheeler, or up onto the trampoline for the kind of great fun that only comes from being with Grandma. And, Grandma's treat drawer was always well stocked. She was truly the heart of her family. Gay was a member of the Prosser LDS church for 30 years, where she diligently shared her talents for teaching, music, and leadership with her friends there. Gay was diagnosed with lung cancer on August 4, 2008. She passed away at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, Washington just 16 days later on August 20, 2008. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at the Prosser LDS Church, 1835 Highland Drive, Prosser, Washington at 10:00 a.m. The Bybee Family kindly asks that your thoughtfulness for Gay be directed to the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
