Gary was born on August 15, 1942, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Arnold and Verna Boehnke. He grew up with a strong sense of duty and patriotism that would shape the course of his life. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the California Maritime Academy. Then he attended California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) before answering the call to serve his country. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Francisco State University. His education laid the foundation for a remarkable life of service.

Gary proudly served in the United States Army for 30 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His military career took him around the world, including service in Vietnam and Germany. Known for his strong leadership, integrity, and care for his soldiers, he earned the lasting respect of all who served with him.

While Gary was proud of his military service, his greatest joy was his family. He shared a loving marriage with his beloved wife, Bonnie Kasten Boehnke, and together they built a life centered on faith, family, and adventure. Gary loved spending time with those he loved most, whether boating, traveling, attending family gatherings, or simply enjoying life's everyday moments together.

He was a devoted father to Michael Boehnke (Amy), Matt Boehnke (Dawn), and Willy Boehnke (Julie). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Ryland Boehnke (fiancée Heather Hinebaugh), Mallory Boehnke, Dylan Castleberry, Shayla Stedman (Josh), Jordan Sanguino, Matthew Boehnke II, Brandon Boehnke (Kayla), Emery Boehnke, Skyler Boehnke, and Jake Laughlin (Jette). He was blessed with great-grandchildren Gunner, Oliver and Amelia Stedman, and Nora Laughlin. He is also survived by many beloved extended family members and dear friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, wisdom, and generosity.

Gary lived a life defined by integrity, loyalty, generosity, and unwavering love for his family. He led by example, teaching the values of hard work, perseverance, honor, and service. His wisdom, sense of humor, and steadfast presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Verna Boehnke.
