Obituary

Our beloved father and husband, Fred Schultz, was born on the 11th of June, 1921, in a farmhouse on the outskirts of Hanks, North Dakota. Fred's parents were Herman Schultz, who was the original pioneer homestead farmer in Hanks, and Helvine Schultz (ne Ausland), who was the first high school teacher in Hanks. Farm life was challenging during the Great Depression, but Herman and Helvine were determined that their children would go to college, so after graduating from Hanks High School in 1938, Fred enrolled at the University of North Dakota, where he studied math and the sciences, was part of the Army ROTC program, and competed on the varsity boxing team. By the time Fred was a senior, most of the UND physics professors were working on World War II research projects, so the chairman asked Fred to teach freshman physics. From 1941 until he retired in 1992, Fred was almost always teaching, going to school, or both. After graduating from UND, Fred served in the wartime Navy as a radio-electronics instructor, and won the light heavy-weight boxing championship of Navy Pier in Chicago. After the war, Fred studied at the University of Washington, where he met Lila Fay Gregory. They were married in Ord, Nebraska in 1949. From 1949 through 1963, Fred studied and taught at the University of Idaho, where he received a Master of Science in physics, and taught at the Montana School of Mines in Butte, Montana State University in Bozeman, and Minot State Teacher's College in North Dakota. During this time Fred spent many summers working on Navy research projects, making important contributions to the Sidewinder air-to-air missile, which is still in use today. From 1963 through 1968 Fred studied and taught at Washington State University, where he received a PhD in physics. In 1968 Fred left WSU for the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, where he served as a professor of physics until 1992, and chaired the Physics Department for much of that time. Away from the university, Fred enjoyed home life with his family, and was an avid hunter, fisherman, camper, skier, and Green Bay Packer fan. Fred and Lila were active members of Trinity Lutheran Church, and travelled all over the world after Fred retired. When living in their beloved semi-rural Wisconsin home became too difficult in January 2008, Fred and Lila moved to the Tri-Cities, where their youngest son, John, could look after them and manage their farms and other business. In the Tri-Cities, Fred and Lila lived in the Manor at Canyon Lakes, Guardian Angel, and Canyon Lakes Restoration and Rehabilitation, where Fred passed peacefully away, with Lila at his side, on the 7th of February, 2014. In his declining years Fred was loved for his mischievous sense of humor, ability to speak in rhymes, love of sweets, endless affection for Lila, memories of boyhood on the prairie, and memories of wartime Navy service, all of which he maintained until the very end. We are deeply grateful to the physicians, nurses, and senior care staff who cared for Fred in his final years. Fred will be deeply missed, but his kindness, intellect, love of knowledge, keen wit, adventurous spirit, and love of the outdoors will live on through his family, friends, and students. He is survived by Lila, son Michael Schultz of Danville PA, daughter Jane Twedt of Palm Desert CA, son John Schultz of Kennewick, granddaughters Carol Elks of Louisville KY and Helen Panzera of Dallas TX, and grandsons Charles Schultz of Seattle WA and Thomas Schultz of Cheney WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, by his sister Grace Pharris, and by his lifelong best friend, Archie Shaw of Mandan ND, who passed away a few months before Fred.
