Obituary

Francis Michael (Mike) Hambelton passed away at his home in Kennewick, WA on April 26th, 2014. Mike was born on September 28th, 1939 in Enterprise, Oregon to Leland and Merle Hambelton. He spent his entire childhood in Wallowa County, Oregon, growing up with his only sister, Mary Lee and niece Linda. He met the love of his life, Beverly Jean Shaver, on the first day of elementary school and never looked back. They enjoyed a small-town courtship, along with lifelong friends, and often delighted their family with stories of their high-school antics. Mike graduated in the spring of 1957 and immediately left for Marine Corps Boot Camp. He returned to Enterprise a year later when he and Beverly were married in the Community Congregational Church in Enterprise. They made their first home in Oceanside, CA where their first child, Debbie, was born. Mike was very proud to serve his country with the United States Marine Corps. He was shipped overseas and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Upon completion of his service Mike and Beverly moved to Spokane, adding to their family with the birth of their son, Kevin. They eventually settled down in Kennewick in 1963, when he became employed by the Kennewick police department. He spent the next 26 years serving the City of Kennewick, retiring as a Lieutenant, in 1989. Retirement was not for him, and he soon went to Hanford Patrol as a Major in charge of traffic, police dogs and criminal investigations. After five years he left to open his own criminal investigation service, Mike's Investigative Services, where he eventually retired for good in 2000. Mike enjoyed his retirement years worshiping God at Desert Springs Covenant Church, where he had been a member since 1963. Although a quiet man of faith, he put his trust in a kind and loving God. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, relaxing at the family cabin in Wallowa Lake, Oregon and cheering on his favorite team, The Tri-City Americans. He was active with the Kennewick Kiwanis, the Columbia Basin Shrine Club and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). Mike was preceded in death by his parents. Leland and Merle Hambelton, and sister Mary Lee Hay. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beverly Hambelton of Kennewick, 2 children, Debbie (Rich) Stone of Winnemucca, NV, Kevin (Sylvia) Hambelton of Kennewick, 5 grandsons, Luke (Mara) Stone, Dustin (Jessica) Stone, Marcus (Sadie) Stone, Jeffrey (Lyndsay) Hambelton, Jason Hambelton, along with 6 great-grandchildren, his niece Linda Ornelas of Walla Walla, WA, and numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Services for Mike will be held Saturday, May 3rd, at 2pm, at Desert Springs Covenant Church, 9915 W Argent, Pasco. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Shriner's Children's Hospital in Spokane, WA. ( http://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/ )
