Florence Margaret Harting was born on October 7, 1919 in Dayton and died on January 31, 2009 in Pasco. She was the fifth of six children and grew up on a sheep ranch in Dayton. She graduated from Holy Names in Spokane and taught for one year in Touchet. She married John Harting on June 18, 1941 and had her daughter Jackie in 1942. They lived on a ranch near Dayton, first raising sheep and later cattle. Florence was one of the founders of the original Washington State Cowbelles Association now known as the Washington CattleWomen and instrumental in organizing the Columbia County Cowbelles. She held numerous positions with the group, including state president and National Vice President. In 1967 she and John moved to a cattle ranch near Kittitas and partnered with her nephew Don Weber, his wife Barb, and their children Rick & Donna. She was very active in the Kittitas/Ellensburg community, giving her time to the Janet Howe Hospital Guild, St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Kittitas County CattleWomen, the Jolly Neighbors Club, the garden club, and bridge club. She was an avid gardener; she grew and showed dahlias as a member of the American Dahlia Society. In 1990 she was named Washington's Cattlewoman of the Year. Florence moved to the Tri-Cities in 2001 to be nearer to her daughter Jackie who cared for her. She spent her last years at Home Sweet Home in Pasco. Florence is preceded in death by her husband, John and her daughter, Jackie Holt. She is survived by her sister, Sylvia Boule Baker; son-in-law, Lyle Holt; granddaughter, Carmi Lyon and husband, Jess, grandson, Dan Holt and wife Martha, great-grandchildren Jonah, Eva, and Isaac Lyon and Ruben and Isabella Holt, and many loving nieces and nephews who had a very special place in her life.
