Obituary

E. Joann Preston passed away December 24, 2016 in Richland, WA. Joann was born in Melissa, TX on March 31, 1934 to Guyer Porter and Dora Phillips Porter. She grew up in Texas and met the love of her life, Bill, in early 1953 while he was stationed in Fort Worth and they worked together at a tractor company. In October 1953, they married and in 1954 they settled in the Tri-Cities after Bill was discharged from the Air Force. In 1966, they moved their family to the farmland north of Pasco where she resided until 2013. In the 1960's and early 1970's Joann was active in the Preston Tractor & Irrigation business with her husband. Also in the early 1970s, she and Bill, along with their three children (Mark, Cathy, Brent), began their vineyard and winery operation Preston Wine Cellars. She and Bill were pioneers in Washington States infancy wine industry at that time. Joann's southern roots shined through in her cooking and hospitality. She was a gracious hostess and her siblings, nieces and nephews loved visiting Washington state to stay with their sister/aunt. Additionally, she and Bill entertained the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, notable wine industry figures and had foreign exchange students from France and Germany, In the 1980's and 1990's she and Bill, along with family and friends, traveled extensively. She enjoyed antiquing and finding items with grapes on them. She had an extensive corkscrew collection that was on display in the family winery. Joann is preceded in death by her parents, all 10 of her siblings, husband Bill and son Mark. She is survived by her daughter Cathy (Bill Etter) of Richland, WA, son Brent (Michele) of Pasco, WA, granddaughters Brooke Preston of Kennewick, WA and Chenyn (Preston) Johnson (Josiah), great-grandchildren Connor and Bryn Johnson of Pasco, WA and numerous nieces and nephews.
